More problems importing LT2002 drawings with AS8

Here we go again.

AS8 is crashing trying to load some AutoCad LT2000 drawing files.

I get as far as the "Linear Scale Factor" dialog box click on OK and I then
get the "Application Fatal Error" dialog box, clicking on the "Continue"
button attempts to create a recovery file.

I then the following two dialogs each repeated 4 times:

"Floating Point Error in 0x81"
"Floating Point Error in 0x8A"

Culiminating in an Exception 03H error in Kernel32.DLL.

I have also discovered a log file in the folder where the drawings reside,
contents as follows:

--------------
Wed Jan 16 15:16:16 2002
Unimplemented AcRxClass::copyFrom() function invoked.

--------------
Wed Jan 16 15:20:22 2002
Unimplemented AcRxClass::copyFrom() function invoked.

--------------
Wed Jan 16 15:25:12 2002
Unimplemented AcRxClass::copyFrom() function invoked.

--------------
Wed Jan 16 15:26:09 2002
Unimplemented AcRxClass::copyFrom() function invoked.

QC7 will load the files, thankfully.

When can we expect a fix please Mr AutoDesk?

Barry.

Hi everyone,

Well I've found the culprit, it's the old selected printer problem
re-occuring, obviouslky not a problem with QC7.

If I select my old trusty HP LaserJet IIIP as my default printer the file
loads no problem.

Now I ask myself, if every other reputable (?) software company, Corel,
Microsoft ;>) et al can all provide software that doesn't crash just because
I choose to run a good quality reliable HP Laserjet 4V A3 format printer,
why does AutoDesk insist on making life difficult for itself and its
customers????

On another rather more sinister point why does AS8 keep wanting to dial up
the Internet and connect to 212.248.131.28??

Hmmm??

I look forward to Mr AutoDesk's response.

Barry.

Well,
Thank you Barry for relating THIS information. So Sketch NOW "phones home" !
FORGET THAT !

Thank you Mr. Gibson ! (assuming it was ZA that caught this activity)

Now you should recognize why the "12 items" are so cotton pickin' secret. They
do not relate to the operation of Sketch as it does to the concept of "SpyWare".
If it is not spyware, then what are the 12 items ??

Attention: If you do not have ZoneAlarm installed, and you are running Sketch
V8..... You might want to find out what information IS being transferred from
your computer !!!

On the Printer thing.... Well, you all know I have been there. I suppose the
developer sits back and asks " What do they want for a hundred bucks ?" DUH ???
To be able to PRINT maybe ?? Unreal.

Thanks again Barry. If V8 is dialin' I don' want it.

ZA interrogates the user for the ability to phone home. Just don't allow
it.

Chris

Yes you're right ZA caught it in the act! Asking for permission for
Sketch.exe to connect, I don't think!!

I tried to trace the address without success unless anyone else has any
ideas?

More concerned at the moment with my import probs!

After 20 nodes (from Central California) that address appears to be in
Southwark near London, England.

Hello Barry

From previous experience I believe the HP drivers were written in Win3.1
format and that is why Sketch does not like them. It wasn't until about
Win98 that HP started writing drivers with up to date code. Sketch isn't
the only program that has this problem with vector-raster-hp problemo.

I haven't seem floating point for a while down here in Oz, but that's
probably because our printers are upside down and these floating points fall
out.

This NG has not heard from Grieg since 12-20-01. Is he on holiday in Southwark

I do not except "just allow it". Inquiring Minds want to know WHY V8 is
trying to call out. I can show a million threads that prove when companies
try using these sly techniques embedded in a product, the product usually
goes by the wayside real fast unless they wise up. Its a matter of
trustworthyness. Its a matter of privacy. If V8 has a legitimate and secure
reason to do it, no one would blink an eye. We will find out soon enough as
there is a place where people talk specifically about programs that "phone
home" making it their mission to find out "why" and "what for". I do not pay
for internet access for everybody else to communicate. Remember TurboCad did
this with their early Free version. Was not long after they Folded. They
made a comeback. That does not always happen.

So, we will see if AD freely tells us or not. I want to know. The whole
Issue of "Spyware" is before congress now and then. it is a big privacy
issue.

As a side note: Why or What or howcome, I do not know, But "Secret Agent"
Gerhard has indicated in a private e-mail to me that the "secret of the 12
items" may be found in a little known University in the South of Africa. How
this possibly ties in with England is beyond me. Where is Inspector Cleusau
these days ?:-) "mums the word"..... ((someone tell this guy how to spell
Cleusau !))

Gerhard.... sure hope this was not classified info. I Hate firing squads.
See ya'll in Take5plus.
