Mirror problem with curves - update

Thanks to Chris L and his help for solving this problem. The above was
a major source of aggravation to me and hopefully if this occurs for
other users they can resolve it as described below.

The problem - the mirror tool refuses to work correctly for curves
despite displaying correct results on reloading the mirrored curves were
absent. All other mirrored entities work correctly.

Cause - AS installation/files had become corrupted even though all other
operations worked as expected.

Solution - AS re-installed, problem solved.



I have decided to cease contributions in this forum as I have no
interest in future releases of AS.

Well Graham,
Just in case you still stop by to check the replies to your last messages, I
am glad it now works for you. I should have stopped and analyzed your
problem long ago, but, alas, time is hard to come by these days. There is
much too much work !

I found out for sure that I have to reinstall AS after any install of my
current Corel Draw versions. AS gets funny, locks up, does all sorts of
silly things. Usually, I can just reinstall over the top and get it back. I
then have to go in and re-apply my personal toolbars though. I have had to
use 3rd party software to dig it all out of the registry though too. That
was during that month long diagnostic "Spat" I had to make it work when it
was just a Printer on the network that AS did not like.

Gerhard introduced me to your website. It's no secret that I love the same
hobby your fortunate enough to enjoy. It sure takes a lot of time and
patience, both of which is evident in your work. I still do not have enough
room for a small model railroad much less live steam ride on models !

If Autodesk "pulls a rabbit out of their hat" with AS and its now "long
term" little quirks, we'll be sure to drop you a line. I sure hate to think
of waiting until some V9 off in the distance......

My question would be to describe your installation process? Why would the
AutoSketch program become corrupt by installing another piece of software?,
(just posing a question). As far as I know 'Sketch only intalls files in
it's own directory and the Autodesk Shared directory when using the "default
install" option. To help me better analyze your issue please describe your
installation settings and process.

Another thing. All Windows installation programs warn to shut down all
running programs, including those running in the task list. I highly
recommend that this step be followed for any program you install. That would
mean opening the task list and shutting down each individual program running
there except for Explorer and Systray before installing the program.

What version of Corel Draw are you using? What are the file types created by
Corel Draw? Does Corel Draw run a program at startup that may be listed in
the task list? If so we may need to shut it off. Since I can't match the
Corel Draw part, you could download the In Control 5 freeware install
monitoring program from Zdnet downloads. Trouble is, You can't be sure that
all registry entries for Corel Draw would be removed upon an uninstall,
therefore testing might be inaccurate upon a reinstall with InControl 5, but
I'd look at the registry entries created by an install of both Corel Draw
and AutoSketch.

Your reasoning was the same as mine and the reason why, in my case, I
considered the mirror fault to be a bug within AS7 and did not reckon a
re-install would correct the problem. Usually, if a program gets
corrupted (memory violation) closing and re-starting resolves the issue.
I am at a loss to understand this one as I have lived with this curve
problem for ages and it was resolved as easily as a re-install. You are
the experts and know what and how your installation is configured and if
there is any possibility for code to be changed either in the executable
or supporting files. I can assure you that corrupt it became. In my
case I do not have Corel Draw so I think you can rule that out. Re
installation procedure, I always follow good practice and have only a
minimal run set loaded at the time. Your interest and follow up to this
problem is a welcome change, I hope you are able to go one step more and
solve the memory issues which are serious but at least one can work
around this by re-starting win98, in my case, once memory has been taken
and not returned to windows memory manager.

I am able to replicate this behaviour. It appears to be a defect in
AutoSketch 7 because on re-opening the drawing with mirrored arcs,
AutoSketch reports the drawing contains 3D entities. This warning dialog
only appears if the tick box "Do not show this message again" was not at
some point checked, and I cannot find a way to turn it back on again!
AutoSketch then either ignores the '3D entities' (the arc disappears) or
flattens '3D entities' (arc stays), and this is determined by the settings
in the Import Options dialog when opening DWG or DXF files.

So, the workaround for the customer is:

File > Open, set file type to either DWG or DXF, select the Options button
and check 'Flatten (project to Z=0 plane)' - OK.

I know this sounds strange, but it works!

Greig,
I am well aware of those pesky proggys running in the background. Short of
closing everything "on screen" I seldom have to shut any additional background
stuff off. I am aware of the Virus programs and what not....

I maintain a small network of about 15 computers. Been installing all kinds for
many years. Why AS gets corrupt after a Corel 7 and 8 install (on the one
computer I run it on in this network) is unknown. I do know how many times I
experienced it when way back I approached the Newsgroup for help with the
strange problems I was having. In my case, it turned out to be an HP 4000
Laserjet printer I had available on my machine. I could add this printer back to
this computer and I assure you, AS will again crash on startup, or crash on
selecting and drawing various entities. I recall Ellipses to be the most
routine. That particular problem costed me many, many hours to figure out. All
AS would do is CRASH ! It was a tip from an AD contributer who put me on the
right track to fix it. Sure miss the availability of that printer......

Crashing is not the case as of late however. I must say that "thinning out" this
particular computer to just what is necessary for programs has allowed for AS to
run just about flawless...... well short of those fixes/requests that didn't get
put into V8 !

I am well aware of the many software compatability quirks that creep up. In
fact, I had a Workstation that used Corel 7 for at least a year without problem.
All of a sudden, for no obvious reasons, it would ONLY print via a PostScript
print driver. After a few days of trying every typical option, you just have to
find work arounds. Time is money. It just shows how there is no way all
programs are going to work on all computers in all combinations.

In fact, sometimes I wonder how "it" works at all with so many companies
releasing buggy programs because of deadlines.......... Reminds me of an old
boss who's favorite comment to the crew was "Send it Out !" We'll patch it in
the Field " !! (He is not in business anymore)

Recently, I moved to a larger Harddrive on the Computer running AS 7 on that
network. I put in Corel first, then AS. Works like a champ. I really do not have
time to chase the whats or whys... I just know it works this way.

On that same network, The company really needs about 5 copies of AS. Problem is,
I have been waiting for the line weight and other desires to be fixed. Now what
? Kind of sours a guy, ya know ? I am not able to go to purchasing and justify
$500 at this point for a program you guys will likely never patch, then be
forced to use for 2 years without what we need, and then spend another $500 for
the next version. Now I have to find time to examine our other options. This too
reflects on recomendations I make to others. Do a Google "Groups" search on
Data-Cut or my name. I have bragged up AS to many for an incredible 2d option. I
also do quite a bit of consulting in Cad-Cam and CNC. Sketch will not be as
popular as it had been in my recomendations, though I admit I don't know what
will be either. It's kind of like trying to brag up Netscape 6 !

Too bad Autodesk didn't poke their nose into the groups and actually "talk" to
some of the knowledgable fellows here long before the "suprise" 2 year after 7
release of V8.

I am still quite undecided as to whether I am going to part with a hundred bucks
simply to see if I can find the 12 new "secret" items in AS8. A few days "out of
the shoot" and it already being indicated that some "new" bugs will have to be
fixed in V9 and "it appears V7 does a better job opening DWG files than V8 is
not helping.............................
