DWG and DXS file support in AutoSketch

I'm new to the group but an old user of AutoSketch (Now using ver 10).  I always have trouble opening an AutoCAD dwg file with AutoSketch.  Should I be requesting dxf files instead?  Any suggestions?  My use of the program is limited to adding low voltage devices i.e. fire alarm and security components to the dwg files I receive in order to create for example, the fire alarm plan layout.
