Drawing a line....v-9

I am new to this program and would like to draw without a grid page (blank screen) and I cannot figure out how to draw a line. I can start the line, O for ortho, then I want the line to be 2.127" long. I need directions for this.

Not the sharpest tack in the box,

John,

Check out the attachment. The instructions are a
bit simpleminded and hopefully they won't insult
your intelligence, it's for total beginners.

But there are basic instructions for how to set up
a drawing page the simplest way. Once you get over
this hump - which I had to do 9 years ago and
hence this little tutorial - you may want to get
Paul Jackson's book, "Hands On A House." It's the
next step (or the first actually).

Can't go wrong.

Harvey

Yep....that's what the F1 key is for.  So is
the Users Manual + the Getting Started Guide.

If you're having trouble drawing a line, good luck
with the rest of the software.  'Coz you'll need it.

Sorry.

Thanks Harvey! I thought there would be a simpler way to determine the length of a drawn line, like in autocad. Your help is appreciated.

Totally welcum, John.

Years and years ago, maybe AS-5, I asked the same
question but put it like this: How many different
ways are there to draw a line?

I believe we all came up with about eleven or
twelve. Maybe more, can't remember now. It was
actually a silly exercise to show ( especially) me
just how many workaround alternatives were
possible to do a simple cad operation.

You can extrapolate to many other entity examples.
That little file you have shows a few of them.

Carrion,

Harvey

Many skilled people are content with the series of actions needed to place a simple line on the screen with this program. I have returned the program and will get one that is less demanding for simle tasks.

Thanks,

DANG.

This Thunderbird won't reply to sender in the
newsreader. It posts to the group. Never saw that
before. Anyone else?

Hi John,
I only have V8 , but it should be the same.
Click on one of the Line drawing buttons on the toolbar
Click on the screen at your startpoint
press the "R" button on your keyboard (This is the secret step you were looking for)
enter the X,Y coords of where the line ends
(you can even put in 2.127" and it will convert to mm )
you need to press the R button again to get out of relative mode. You will find yourself eventually using these hotkeys a lot e.g., I,G,M,X,Y, instead of pressing on the toolbar buttons.

Also you can single click on an existing line in your drawing, and in a toolbar up the top will appear the X,Y coords of start and end , and length , and angle, you can edit in these boxes, this is also a really neat way to make circles (just draw circles any size then edit their diameter)

Also you might try using polylines rather than plain lines as you can do more with them

Cheers, BobT
