AutoSketch 8.0 -- WinME -- MFC42.DLL Error on StartUp

Help ... I just received Autosketch v8.0 yesterday and installed it on my
Dell WinME (Dell 8100 Series w/Pent IV. I'm running IE 6 and all Win updates
are current.

The AS install appears to run fine, but when I try to start Autosketch, the
initial splash license screen appears, but is follows by a MFC42.DLL error
and termination. I've tried uninstalling and reloading to no avail.

Am dead in the water ...

Hello

From what I have seen on my computer that file is a Microsoft C++ file and
if you do a search you will probably find a few of them. Are any other
programs now having problems, I have never seen this one with Sketch.

I would use Add/Remove to remove the prior install. Shut Down and restart. Then
I would try to turn off ALL running programs via msconfig IF WinME still uses
that. Then shut down and restart the computer again without the unecessary
programs.

Then Re-Install Version 8. If no restrat is required from the install, See if it
runs right then and there. If it runs, reset all of the startup programs in
msconfig and Restart the computer one more time. Check if it runs ok after the
restart.

If not, try copying the mfc42.dll from your windows system directory to the
autosketch directory. Take appropriate precautions incase you corrupt that one..
Then Try V8 again.

I can only assume the mfc42 file became corrupt upon install, maybe because of
another program running (do u have virus software? thats a no-no ya-know)

OR, maybe the softwares creater was so concerned about the new "bug-holed" XP,
that they did not put a mfc42.dll that was compatible with WinME on the install
disk ! (Ya never know if THAT made the "top 12" list because the list is Top
Secret.)

I "swiped" the following in regards other programs, WinMe and the .dll file. ( I
already forgot from where)

This message can occur if the Mfc42.dll file is
damaged,
corrupt, or missing. This message also occurs if a
program replaces the Mfc42.dll with an older
version.

On your screen, locate and click the Start button.
From
the Start menu, point to Find, then click Files or
Folders.

In the Find: All Files window, in the Named text
box,
type: Mfc42.dll. Ensure that the Look in text box
is set
to (C:). Click Find Now.

Located under Name, click the file Mfc42.dll once
to
select it. From the File menu, click Properties.

In the Mfc42.dll Properties dialog box, click the
Version
tab.

To the right of the File version line, locate the
version
number.

If the version is prior to 6.00.8267.0, you need to

continue with the troubleshooting steps below.

Note: The correct file is backwards-compatible with

programs requiring a previous version.

The following procedures provide a step-by-step
process to rename the current Mfc42.dll and copy
the
newer version to the hard disk. This file cannot be

renamed or removed from inside Windows.

On your screen, locate and click the Start button.
From
the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the Shut Down
Windows dialog box, click Restart the Computer in
MS-DOS mode, then click OK.
At the command prompt, type: CD\System. Press the
ENTER key.
At the C:\Windows\System prompt, type: Ren
Mfc42.dll
Mfc42.old. Press ENTER to rename the file.
Insert the Works Suite 99 CD number one into the
CD-ROM drive.
At the command prompt, type: Copy
D:\Mhp\System\Mfc42.dll (where D is the letter of
your
CD-ROM drive). Press ENTER. The Mfc42.dll file is
copied to the hard disk.
After the file has been copied, turn off the
computer,
then turn it on again.

If V8 still does not work, I'm sure they will jump in here and help you first
thing monday morning..... (-:

We all know Windows ME was a complete lemon.

I would suggest using a new Operating System, even if it means reverting
back to Windows 98.

* No other program is having problems and I have quite a diverse number.

* The version of Mfc42.dll in my Windows system directory is --> 6.8.8665.0
(which appears more recent than the one referenced below.)

* The autosketch folder does not contain this dll ... Placing a copy of the
file (above) there makes no difference.

* I have other programs that do contain this dll (some older versions) ...
but the most recent instance (July 2001), contains the same version above.

* I'm not particularly a proponent of WinMe, but it's proven reliable for me
in all other cases.

I assume that if I unistall and reinstall via "Safe Mode", that would be as
clean and possibly simpler than the method suggested below (?)

FIXED ... Apparently this was caused by a corrupted MFC42.dll system file. I
found another copy of the same version in a folder of a recently installed
app and was able to replace the windows\system copy while in SAFE mode.

Thanks to all that reponded.

I should have asked if ME has that system file checker program I alway forget
about. Curious if that would have caught such a problem.

We've got one ME machine at the shop.... One is enough. Looks like I won't jump
on the XP bandwagon anytime soon either.
