AS8 on BackOrder!

Just for the hell of it I ordered a copy of AS8 from the AutoDesk Web Site
(UK Shop) over the weekend.

I had an email from DigitalRiver this morning to tell me that it's on
BackOrder.

This new version must be really popular if AS have already run out of stock.

What's other peoples experience of availability?

Perhaps it's just the UK being behind the times again?

Barry.

Not tried it. The lack of Win95 support is a big issue for me.

Since this is quite a new product I suspect that the initial UK batch will
be behind the US since there are the usual localisation issues, not to
mention getting the boxes to the UK, import procedures etc etc. Perhaps
you'll get it in time to be bug finding around the Christmas tree.

Barry,

This sometimes happens with a new product apparently. It's an automatic
response, maybe because inventories haven't been updated. It happened to
me with AS7, and the next day it was in the mailbox - unfortunately.

Barry,

Once you get AS8, could you do me a favor and let me know
if AS6 drawings could be used with it without any transfer
problems?
My nightmare is that Mrs. Santa Claus is all by herself in the
kitchen putting AS8 labels on patched recycled AS7 disks waiting
for daily orders to trickle in and then no boxes or free sleighs
and deer to deliver them right now.

Will do, Gerhard

I'm particularly interested to see how it copes with Drafix CAD format
files, particularly as I have a couple of thousand!

At the moment with AS601 I have 'tweaked' the registry so that AS opens and
saves in CAD format. I can't wait to tinker with AS8.

V8 will open CAD files and the registry works the same so the two settings
will be identical

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoSketch\8.0\Environment]
"NativeExtension"="CAD"
"NativeFilter"="CAD"

It will state QuickCAD but opens the Drafix OK.

V8 will only export as QuickCAD and is not backward compatible to V6 or
before.

Our PowerTools add ons to AutoSketch will save as a format called CAD4 from
V8 and this is the Drafix 4.1 format, but this cannot be done directly from
the shelf version of AutoSketch V8.

Paul,

I do not have QuickCAD. AutoSketch R6 with Harvey's precious
R6.01 patch is my basic workhorse.
Would I have to convert all my R6 drawings to DWG Release 14 to
use V8?
Please be patient with my relative ignorance about the mechanics
of what to do next or should I just face & accept the fact to be
prematurely doomed?

I am using R8, as of today. I opened some files I created in March 1999. I
believe they are R6.01 due to the date. I was able to edit and save the
drawings in R8. When I opened them, there was an "RO" label in the header
after the file name. I assume that is for read only, but I could read and
write.

John,

Could you please check if you could change or update them
or is "RO" the below the belt punch?

I am able to change and update. After I save and reopen, the "RO" does not
reappear and the changes remain.

Hello

RO is because they will not save back in the native drafix 4.1 format only
4.12 which is QuickCAD.

Hello

No, your files will open as they are.

However, they will not save the same way, therefore you will need to save
them as SKF, because V6. or V4 CAD files cannot be created from V8.

Now I'm confused.

Perhaps you are being punished for skipping V7 and RO signifies that the
file is "Really Old".

Nathen Paul (Bit of Yorkshire Dialect!)

So can I take it that if I open my Drafix CAD files (some in 3.01 format)
and save them as AS8 CAD files, my colleague who has QC7 will be able to
open and edit them?

Merry Christmas

Barry

So would drawings from Drafix 4.1 or Autosketch 2 come up as RRO (really, really
old)?

Hello Barry,

Yes, you can take it, but if you burn it on a CD it will probably end up as
read only and you will need to change the file attributes and turn off the
read only setting then your friend will be able to save it as what ever it
was in the first place.

Merry Christmas

PJ

Maybe! I've given up on all the old AS2.1 files I have, if I need to change
them I redraw them.
