AS 8 Fatal error when opening a DWG file...

We just recently instaled AS 8 in are system (running on Windows XP PRO)and are experincing problems trying to open DWG files from AutoCAD LT & AutoCAD R14.
When we try opening one of this files the program crashes. This is more or les the message that we get: "A fatal error has occured and the application must shut down.
Currently opend drawing which have been modified will be written in to a temporary directory for later recovery."
I thought AS 8 was able to open AutoCAD files without any problems ?

Are these dwg files that you are attempting to open?
If they are try the following, when you choose to open the file and set
Files of type to AutoCAD Drawing File (dwg), choose the Options button
in the lower right and set 3D data to Ignore.

I am getting precisely the same problem when trying to open SKD files last used in v5. The final message before shutfown is "Floating Point Error 0x81"!!! The files preview OK and some open, but a lot do not. This is nothing to do with 2.0 version files, which I process using the 2.1 utility.

See my previous post 20 Jan 2002, 'More problems with AS8'

I hope you have more success with support from AutoDesk than what I did!

Teresa,
As I mentioned to you via e-mail. The files are all AutoCAD (dwg) files. Some were made with AutoCAD R14 and some were done with AutoCAD LT98. I tried already opening them with the ignore 3D option but that did not help. The program still creates a Fatal error when opening these files.

Hello

Your floating point error is probably caused by a
printer driver, usually HP as default.

make another printer driver default, and if you
don't have one load a canon BJ230 as a decoy default printer to see if this
rectifies the problem.

HP drivers off the net seem OK it is just the ones
that came with printers in the box.

If you care to post one of the offending .DWG files
in Customer Files or send 1 directly to me, I would be interested to have a look
and report back.

Ric,
I will look for one simple file to e-mail you, to see if you can figure out what's causing things anoying problem.

John.

PS: I was told by an associate of ours, that since this is not an occuring problem with ALL DWG files, that this maybe a transfer problem. Let me explain, customers e-mail us the files for us to do some rendering on them (Colourizing & texturizing Archit. Drawings)and it maybe that our firewall or anti-virus program is corrupting the files (according to our associate). However, this problem has also happened on some files that we have received via CDs.

Just more fuel to this fire.....
