looks like Adesk is killing the threads you reference now 🙂

"I need ADT 2006 Structural Members not ADT 2007 from Revit Structure 4."...

Another case of someone installing the newest release without checking to
see if it is compatible with software they need for production.

If you use a vertical product don't concentrate on drawing format. The
custom objects change almost every year. If you nee to port your work to
Shmegegee CAD. Make sure that Shemegegee CAD will handle EVERYTHING from the
latest release. If it will only handle R14 formats. Then you are stuck with
R14 unless the makers of Shmegegee CAD upgrade their product.

I used to try the route where I would install a "test" version of a new
release to use for a couple of months before letting everyone else have it.
I've learned that there are too many issues in trying to save back. Now a
new release is all of nothing.

I see you said you use STAAD. What kind of intercommunication can Autocad 3d (vanilla) have with STAAD? What can Atuocad MDT do with STAAD, if anything?

The engineers here use STAAD for a lot of their work, and if I can eliminate their engineering time by them using the models that I create for drawings, then it's obviously beneficial...

I think I'm going to have to search around the internet. I know we're doing a lot of things in not-the-most-efficient way, but we've been so busy with work, it's hard to find better solutions.

LOL - sounds like we had the same LDD trainer.

STAAD?? Sorry to hear that. Have your guys check out RISA

http://www.risatech.com/risa-3d.asp

Interface is much more flexible and provides a two-way communication with Revit Structures that STAAD has only dreamed about.
But hey, that's just me.

We use RISA Tower for our communications tower needs. They like that, it's just more of a "We know STAAD very well, like it, and change is unnecessary" kind of thing, I believe.

Is the communication limited to Revit Structures? Or can it work with Autocad platforms as well, vanilla, or even MDT?

Its only TWO way with Revit Structures.

Our guys knew STAAD as well. It was gaps in STAAD's code checking that sent them looking for alternatives. If they like Tower, they'll love 3D.
But hey, that's just me.

I haven't heard any complaints from Tower. I have talked briefly and generally with them about STAAD, since I had no experience with CAE programs before coming here. They know there're gaps in the program from what I can tell. They say that an engineer should know his/her design well enough to know what to expect, and if STAAD throws a curveball, or if you see something unexpected, you know to check it... but they never DON'T check STAAD's work.

They just upgradedd to STAAD 2006, so I don't think they have any plans on changing... but right now, I think it'd be too devistating on the company to have the engineers learn, or at least get used to, new software. We have 4 employees... the engineers and me. We're all working overtime and weekends pretty. A lot of our clients require some fast turnarounds now and then, and I think some hiccups in software that affects 75% of the company and 100% of the engineers would be costly at this point.

Maybe when we get some more engineers worth hiring and possibly someone with RISA 3D experience. I would like to see us go in that direction if it's two way with REVIT Structures... Revit structures, though, would be a ways off as well, so it wouldn't matter if we got RISA 3D soon.

Are your work layers named Larry, Moe and Curly?

In my case it's still have the same trainer. I say him last week.

Maybe, but our guys took to RISA very fast. After fighting with STAAD for years, RISA seemed to come very naturally for all but one guy. He's still waiting for this "computer fad" to burn out so he can get back to "real engineering" with his slide-rule.
But hey, that's just me.
