Tool Palettes File Locations

From options is going to my computer, I want to share the same catalogue
with my collegues.

(I know I keep asking similiar questions, and maybe the answer to this
question has already been answered, but here it is:)

Since it is so easy to add pallettes to a catalogue, (I can't believe it is
that easy). I am thinking I want to share this catalogue with my collegues,
(custom pallettes within custom catalogues, more than likely custom,
industry and/or job specific content) .

It appears that the Tool Palettes File Locations determines where this is
done, that is, to redirect it to the server for ALL to enjoy. BUT, when I
say for all to enjoy, this would mean for ALL to enjoy, because they too can
add/subtract from the catalogue. Maybe that's alright, I don't think there
is much to screw up there anyway, but I am a bit leery. Unless I need to
set up permission restrictions from the server, but that will likely cause
prob's as well.

But, as I 'write' out loud, it probably isn't neccessary for EVERYONE to be
able to create catalogues. But definitly be able to create pallettes. So,
maybe someone understands what I am rambling about and give a hint or two
how they intend to unify their office, maintain some control of content, and
give enough liberties to all the users for a even workflow.

Once you have the workspace setup locally as how you want to share, copy
those items to a new catalog within the Content Browser (created on a
server).
Your colleagues then drag and drop the palettes from the Content Browser
into their workspace and voila - shared catalogs allowing some customisation
(i.e. additional tools, or reduction of tools when not needed) on the
workspace, i.e. in ADT

Hi Paul -

Two important things here:

1) The "Tool Palettes File Locations" is part of your profile and tells ADT
where to load/save the tool palettes that are in your actual work area.
Technically the format is the same format of tool catalogs that are
available in the Content Browser...and one could refer to it as the
'internal workspace catalog.'

2) Tool Catalogs that are accessed from the Content Browser are meant to be
the public sharing place or the place you save your customized
tools/palettes for your own later use. Just create a folder on a network
location, create a new catalog, and then anyone can 'add' that catalog to
their own Content Browser library. Normal file/folder permissions applies
here to dictate rights.

When a user drags an item out of a tool catalog and into their ADT
workspace, the Content Browser will give it link-back information so that if
the tool's properties change OR if more tools were added to the tool
palette, all users can get the latest by click "refresh" from their
workspace (sort of like refreshing a web page).

Back to item 1: If all users where pointing to "internal workspace catalog"
in their profile, this would mean that everyone would be acting on the same
data. One person deletes a tool, and it will be deleted from everyone
else's palette. If the folder that the data was in was made read-only, then
they couldn't add to it either. The recommended workflow for centralized
control is to just have every user have their own 'internal workspace
catalog', as the install defaults to, but then encourage your team to grab
from (and add to) centralized tool catalogs via the Content Browser.

However, this is ADT/AutoCAD and usually there is flexibility. 🙂 You will
note that the 'Tool Palettes File Locations' is just that, plural. You can
specify many paths per profile. What you might want to do is create a
folder on a network location that has a tool palette that you *know* will
always be fixed, make the folder read-only, and then add that path to your
user's profile. ADT will then combine all palettes it finds in the paths
specified for the profile.

Lastly, your users will be able to tell if an entire palette is refreshable
or read-only due to a tiny icon added to the bottom of the palette (a
refresh button or a lock icon).

Make sense?

Perfect sense, I had an inkling to add addtional paths, but wasn't sure if
that may create havoc or not. This is truly excellent, and see a lot of
potential for this feature.
