Removal of my info on my book

Anne Brown has sent me a note saying that I am advertising my book, and that
she is removing my post.

I don't make my living from my books, I make my living by being an
Architect, and commenting on Technology. I mentioned my book because I
believe that it would help many people.

I also mentioned NJAUG because I will be there showing tips and tricks +
info people might want to know, I get paid no money for doing this seminar
nor do I intend to make money by teaching ADT.

I do write the Toplines column on ADT because it gives info in which I am
interested.

I have always been interested in the welfare of others. I am very
successful and happy, and want others to be so.

Thank you Ed.

Many of us who are here simply want to be a part of the community that helps
each other. I guess its a tough call on Anne's part but there are rules.

However, as most adults (and even children) know, it all depends on how you
interpret the rules. I do have to wonder how you mentioning your book
differs from someone who is constantly posting on Autodesk's servers with
the URL to their website where a visitor is presented with nothing but
products for sale. No free downloads, no tips and tricks, no useful
information - only retail products for sale.

Discussion, group.

Looks like your post is in pn.classifieds (which is really where it belongs
according to my understanding of Autodesk's news standards).

Advertisements in the form of a "Tag Line" or "Signature" are allowed with
certain limitations on replies to questions. Links to product urls are
allowed if it's in response to a posted question, for example if someone was
looking for a replacement revision cloud routine a link to a site offering
such a product would be ok. The post that Mr. Goldberg is referring to was
not in response to a posted question and it was not removed, it was moved to
the classifieds group where a post of that type belongs. You may read it
there.

If using a NNTP newsgroup reader, the CLASSIFIEDS newsgroup can be found at
news://discussion.autodesk.com/pn.classifieds

You may also access this discussion group via the HTTP web-based forums at

So it is improper for a poster to place in the body of his or her response
(or signature file) the URL to their "sales" site if they do not sell at
that site a solution directly related to the discussion topic?

Jonesr:

I have looked in the discussion group and I see another person mentioning a
book. I don't care if people plug or don't plug, etc. I thought I was doing
a service. I also notice that someone asked about ADT vs Revit, and that
wasn't removed. I, however, received a notice that my string on that subject
was being removed when I posted that question several weeks ago.

I will soon have my own sight up where I can discuss what I feel with out
being "curtly" stopped and singled out.

Ed: I am sure your book and your seminars are very valuable. The other person (Paul Aubin) happened to have written the book which became the standard for ADT 3 and 3.3., according to many participants here, who also feel him to be "one of the group" by his constant participation. There have been many, many mentions of desire for the 2004 edition, which opens the door for him to reply, which he has done fairly modestly. Perhaps if you had paid me $2 to plug YOUR book, as he did, I could have done a more subtle job than you did in getting the word out. Bob

I don't usually answer posts as below on the open newsgroup but
this warrants a public answer.

The guidelines say no ads in technical support groups
""Advertisements and other types of promotional messages should
be posted to the Professional Networking Forum, in the classified
ad discussion group."". Professional Networking is now known as
Community Groups.

Here is how moderators interpret that one line though we will
discuss this policy in our closed group. The purpose of the
newsgroups is to help the users, not to "enforce" rules just
because they are there. If we agree on a change of policy and the
management agrees, we'll post back.

Promotional messages that are posted as a stand alone message are
moved to Classified Ads. If moderators did not do this, the
groups would quickly become filled with ads.

If a user asks a question such as "Are there any books on ADT?"
an author is more than welcome to answer and tell about their
work. If another user knows of material they can post including
URLs. The "no ads" policy is simply to prevent the wholesale
posting of ads.

URL signatures are allowed. Hopefully they do not become two page
ads but just the URL signoff. The posting of URLs within messages
is allowed if they point to helpful information and are not URLs
to competitive products.

Now the Revit discussion - at 8:24 last night Eastern, I answered
yet another question on Revit posted to the ADT2004 group. I
recommended searching through the groups for all those posts made
months ago. NO ONE PERSON was singled out on any past deletions
on Revit. Some times moderators remove an entire discussion
rather than try to pick and chose single posts. A wholesale
deletion is rare but usually means the topic is so hot that it
goes outside our guideline borders.

Again, the moderators will discuss books and recommend (or not) a
change of policy.

So anyone, have you read any good ADT books out there? I hear ED GOLDBERG
and PAUL AUBIN have written excellent ones? Anyone know the URL's to their
websites?

(Sorry Anne, couldn't resist! This would be an acceptable s..l..o..w pitch
to the strike zone, yes?)

Aw, thats not exactly what I think I said 😉

Item #1 Signature tags, can link to any url that don't violate Autodesk
posting guidelines. For example if you have a web site about Autodesk Easter
Eggs, it can appear on every post you make, regardless of topic. If you
signature links to a porn site, its going to get clipped.

Item #2 Post Content (the body of the message), can contain links to sites
in response to questions posted, if the url dosen't violate the rules. For
example if I post a question asking where can I buy my own personal copy of
AutoCAD, you can post a link to your favorite reseller in response. If you
post a link to where I can buy pirated software, it's going to get clipped.

I hope that helps to clarify the difference.

Messages over the last month were reviewed. Another author's
stand alone post on a new book was found and moved to Classified
Ads.

What if my signature file contains the URL for my site on which I sell
Autodesk product "add-ons." Is that OK without exception?

It is not OK without exception. There are some types of 3rd party
applications that are not allowed to post URL's to their sites, but "in
general" it is acceptable if your sig contains a link to your application.
