Orphaned XREFS

What is an orphaned xref and why is it not anywhere in the help files?

Orphaned xrefs are nested xrefs, that the parent xref cannot be located: DWG file ---> Xref in DWG file----> (parent xref) Xref in Xref----> Orphaned because Xref in DWG cannot be found, is unloaded, or has been deleted/renamed/etc. Make sense?
