Ne Netowork Guru's out there?

I have two locations from which i work.
The Network and my Laptop when unplugged form my network. Both work well and
i like the setup asis .. the chellenge lies in images and repathing the
project when changing location. I dont believe this would be ADT based, but
related in some manner....
Is it possible to create a "False location" on my laptop that would map the
location of the network.

for instance.. The network location for the Project Data is:
\\Server\RHDD
The location on my laptop is my documents...
Can I make my computer / ADT think that its looking at a folder on my
computer but with a path similar to that of the Network?

You can use the SUBST command to assign a drive letter to a folder. I do that at home to simulate network letter drives used at work. I do not know how/if you can do the same with the network address as you listed it. Guess this isn't much help.

I agree with David about the drive letter mapping, but I don't think you can simulate the server name for project pathing. Reason being that when you reconnect to the network it isn't possible to have 2 machines named the exact same name. MS Windows won't allow this on the same network for the obvious problems that could occur if you called a file from the network how does it know which file to pull if you have 2 places named the same.

Until we have the opportunity to use DRIVE LETTER PATHING IN PN instead of UNC this will be a problem. (Autodesk I hope your listening)

Yes the ADT still hasn't woken up to this simple concept it would seem.

WE USE DRIVE LETTERS FOR A REASON autodesk! To avoid this problem.
I have asked for this in the wished group and in the Beta test groups
last year. I received to response that I can remember, so I only assume
I was ignored or it works around some problem that is no evident to the
users.

This is like item #16 of reasons I won't use the borked up PN.

it slows down my loading of autocad off the network, it sits and sits as if it is frozen then it will finally come to live since it is trying to resolve the UNC pathing . it take sometimes 5 mins to load ADT if u have a project running on a machine, and you do not close the project and run the cad offline
it is plain ANNOYING and I get too many support calls for this reason. my autocad wont open. Guess what the client is not going to wait 5 min for you to load the prog

fyi

It may be a tedious process, but have you looked into using Explorer's offline folder functionality? You can use this feature to create a virtual copy of files on your laptop and retain network folder paths and structure. Since the files are synchronized, any changes on your laptop are pushed back to the network when you log back in. Just a thought.

Amen....

We were duped into thinking relative paths were going to get around this... Now I just have a bunch of projects in which the xrefs are about half relative and half absolute... for some reason the sheets refuse to convert to relative..

For all those that require a more difinative step by step process to
Mapping drives, the following may be of some interest.

Right, best way to do this is with mapped drives

When you at the office and you accessing your server, you should map a
drive to \\server\roo. Right click My Computer - Map Network Drive - Choose
a drive letter you want to use and in the folder area type \\server\roo.
Tick 'reconnect at logon', that will map it every time you boot up. Click
finish, go to My Computer and you will see a drive mapped to that share.
Always work off this mapped drive from now on when opening/saving drawings.

When you are away from your work network and you boot your laptop you might
get a failure message that it cant map the drive, I think there is a tick
box saying that it must ignore the error in future but must always try map
the drive - that's what you want.

Now on your laptop make a folder and share it as whatever, lets say
'laptopshare'. Make sure you set permissions so only you and admins have
access. Copy/update all your work to that folder (keeping the same folder
layout as \\server\roo). When you are away from home map a drive as above
using the same drive letter but the folder to map to is
\\127.0.0.1\laptopshare (dont tell it to map everytime else laptop will get
confused)

This way the laptop/cad doesn't care where the mapped drive is pointing, all
its cares about is the drive letter and because it's the same it should all
work fine. So when you opening your drawings, etc, always open them from the
'mapped drive'. That way cad will think everything is hunky doory whether
working off server or laptop. All make sense??

If the drive mapping to \\127.0.0.1\laptopshare does not work it might be
because you are using service pack 2 of windows xp, to fix this download and
install this patch:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884020

You could also make a batch file that automatically maps the drive when
away from home - you just double click it and it will map the drive- no need
to do it via My Computer.

Make a text file and type the following in the first line, replace
\\127.0.0.1\laptopshare with whatever you shared the folder on your laptop
as and replace the drive letter ( Z: ) to whatever you chose to map as:

NET USE Z: \\127.0.0.1\laptopshare /PERSISTENT:NO

Save the file, now you need to change the extension of the file from .txt
to .bat

Keep this on your laptop and when you away from work just double click it
and it will map the drive to the local share
