Multi storey editing in one file

I hav seen various wishes in these newsgroups for the ability to edit
multiple storey buildings in one file. Here's my solution that nearly
achieves this and also lets people who want to edit one file per floor also
work on the same project.

1. Set up the project in the traditional ADT way with one floor per file.

2. Make a model file with each floor file xrefed in.

3. In the model file make a layout for each floor showing only the layers
required for that floor plus local UCS to give the correct height.

4. Edit the various floors using refedit in the relevant floor layout.

Layer steering for each storey using wildcards is easy using the xref name,
no extra level keys in the layer standard for those working in the model
file.

I must admit that I have not tried this on a real project (I'm happy enough
with the 'traditional' way), but i don't see why it shouldn't work

how about the exterior walls?
if they are drawn as 30' high, how do you only show the windows for the
second floor? i guess one *could* make the exterior walls in each floor plan
drawing, but then you must refedit the exterior walls.... i think thats a
major PIA. the exterior of the building should be edited all at once. see
the threads of 28.mmar.01 "re:repost 3d model" and 29.mar.01 "xclipped xref
does not show in plan view". i also outlined a method for much the same
thing as you.... i think it may have been in one of the threads listed above
or one even earlier....

Biull Glennie was going to see about posting a file with the correct way to
set cut planes above and below a floor slab to isolate the exterior wall to
display only in the correct "z- zone"...

i am in agreement with you on the ideas..... i just cant figure out how to
make it work.

set the cut plane height to cut the second floor (or whatever windows you wish to show) then
put the other windows (don't want to see) on a turned off layer. But you have to reset
the cut plane height every time you change a viewport. That's my own personal current solution and
it seems to be working. Wish I could attach cut plane to display config or viewport, but haven't figure
it out, yet.
