keep xrefs unloaded

is there a way to keep xrefs unloaded in a sheet file even after the xrefs have been updated?

When you unload an xref, via the xref manager, it should stay unloaded till
reloaded, via the xref manager.

That in ADT06 by the way.

yes, i would like this to be the case, but actually, once i update the xref, it loads automatically in the sheet file even after i have specifically unloaded it in the xref manager. this is significant because when i have a tree of nested xrefs, processing time goes way down if i unload the ones i do not need for a particular sheet file. it would be far more efficient if they stayed unloaded. might there be a setting for this? adt2006.

?? How are you "update the xref" ?? I guess I don't follow.

Have you thought about using overlay instead of attach for any of those
nested xrefs you don't need in the sheet file?

thanks, but same results if using an overlay. once the overlay is updated (saved), the unloaded xrefs automatically reload. it seems to me that the operation i need should happen in xref manager, independently of the way the xref is referenced.

perhaps you meant that i should be using overlays instead of attached xrefs to avoid nesting resource issues, so i'll see if this makes sense with my process. would have to see if this would eliminate the need for unloading manually. thanks.

You are correct; that is what I meant, just didn't say it well!

overlays do help keep resources down (thanks for the suggestion, Larry), but some xrefs i do need to actually attach in order to make them filter through to some drawings and not others. hence, (and *** Attn: Autodesk***) i still need some way to set an xref in xref manager as "manually reload only" to catch the xrefs that eventually do filter through the drawing tree where i may not need them.

I read through this quickly so I may be missing something, do you mean
update the xrefs when the xref manager notifies you that an xref has changed
and you click on the notification to reload them?

If so then yes, as far as I know, you are up the creek. When you tell it to
update it automatically reloads the unloaded xrefs. It drives me nuts also
but that is the way it is at least in 2006. I have 08 loaded but I have not
tried that to see if it has changed.

Right now when the notification pops up I go to the manager and reload only
the ones that have changed. It is not as handy but at least the
notification lets you know something has changed.

If the is what it is then turn the annoyance off, I did, and reload your
xrefs manually as needed. Thought it was cool that it would tell you that
an xref had been updated, till the stupid thing would come up every 5 mins.
and it would reload unloaded xrefs. Just an ANNOYANCE. Just like XP telling
you that you just printed something, turned that off too.
