Nathan,
If they are shape or font files, you are correct that the drawing knows it
needs to find these files like xrefs and will look for them in the search
path, because they have been loaded into the drawing and it must have the
file to reload the information. Importing of contour data as described is a
complete process that will not need to continue to reference the source
files.
Just FYI, for those of you that may not be used to processing this civil
data type.

Not to discount Larry's comments but I just ask the surveyor for his files
and then put them in the search path and it loads them without comment.

LOAD is for Font & Shape file types. If you have contours in those format
extensions, they are most likely ESRI or Microstation exported shape files.
You will need Autodesk Map to import them into an AutoCAD format. See if
the files can be provided to you in DXF format. ADT will handle those.

I've got topo lines sent to me in shx & shp formats & I want to import them
into an autocad file. The help menu says I just type "load" & select the shx
file. It doesn't work, though. I'm assuming that the files I'm trying to
import are useable. Any suggestions?
