Freedom tower

What do you think?

http://www.aia.org/aiarchitect/thisweek06/0714/0714freedom.cfm

I'm very disappointed.

Looks nice except the top antennae which resembles an upside down push-pin.

Well, it's certainly better than this homage to the murders on flight 93.
The architect claims that it's just an accident that it looks like an
Islamic flag. I suppose he must have other designs that accidently look like
buildings.

At least this boring design will be functional for tenants
wanting to lease contiguous space on a usable floorplate,
and for the building owner.

Let's not forget it's a commercial building paid for and
owned/operated by a commercial leasing company looking to
recoup $millions of lost rent revenue from huge floor plates
from the original towers.
"we the people" don't own it, we don't get a say when it
comes to commerce and making money 😞

A tower is a tower, but It is the base that is horrendous. Urbanism SOM-style.

Urbanism at the hands of the Port Authority, the Feds, and hundreds of other
beauracracies. The original tower was much more elegant, but the design has
been very much controlled by those other than the design team at SOM. Ifeel
the design team did a fabulous job, considering all of those out there that
were dictating what the design had to be.

Not architecturally innovative, for sure. I also thought of Dean's point -- another is that the height itself, the angle at which most people will see it, are rather more dramatic than the rendering conveys.
The tower will reflect the light and sky in some interesting ways, which those familiar with New York light can understand.
My main concern is the "bombproof" base -- will be pretty foreboding from the street, absent some innovative colors or decoration.
The top thing looks like a toothpick through a lump of pizza dough, or a cartoon saber -- it is ridiculous in the rendering.

PS- a few years ago, I drew up a design for the Memorial Competition for an Architect friend. It would be great to see the city and the hole in it healed.

That's a fair point and hard to disagree with.

But the base of this building looks like a pill box to me.

It's an unintented homage to a militaristic world.

That's the result of "design by committee".

He provided inspiration, got millions worth of publicity, and did not turn out the goods, although he and his wife were fascinating on TV. I am not sorry for him -- he was the right instigator, not the right creator for this -- sorry I did not see any buildable concepts that knocked me out.

what software are they using to draw up the cd's?

that is the important question.

Jack, now either you already know the answer to that or you are trying to
stir stuff up in the ADT group :-).

yes, and the base is a result of "requirements" that led to the abandonment
of the original design. The new design has been moved back from the
streets, and has been designed in such a way to withstand a drive-by bombing
such as the one in Oklahoma at the Federal Building. This "design-feature"
was dictated to the team at SOM by Homeland Security.

All that brainpower and this is the best they could come up with?

Their 'jobs' website still requires all Architectural
applications to be proficient in AutoCAD, 3DS and/or Rhino.
No mention of ADT that I could see.

don't fault the Designers,
they've been strapped by the capibilities of the chosen software....

Rubbish. Capabilities of a software have very little to do with functional
or artistic characteristics of a design. There are countless immortal
designs done with nothing but pencil and paper. Capabilities of software
mostly affect the time it takes to produce the CDs and number of errors
remaining in resulting set.
