Do you really want to do this? <N> - Moved from AutoCAD 2002

We are having a problem opening some drawings. It is hard to be sure if it
is certain drawings or if it happens randomly, but here is what happens:

When opening the drawing the text window shows that the Xrefs are resolved,
then the AutoCad Express menu loads, then we get:

1302 selected
Do you really want to do this?

If we respond with "N", then it says:
Everything has been undone.

But the message
Do you really want to do this?
repeats and we respond "N" again
and the whole process repeats another 5 or six times.

Finally, the _Help command is executed.
Closing Help will usually get us to the command prompt, but
shortly thereafter we get
Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0xffffff Exception at 654448a0h

Any ideas at all? Thanks, Mark

Do any of your files, including the XREF's, have objects that originated in
Architectural Desktop in them?

We have had countless problems with this. One (probably not the only) cause
has been identified as having associative hatch boundaries that are objects
in xrefs. In other words, if you have hatches and xrefs in the same
drawing, set all of the hatches to be non-associative.

Now, if there was only a way to make non-associative hatches the default for
the hatch dialog.

Yes. In fact we are using Arch Desktop 3.3. I posted here because it
wasn't obvious that it was related to the arch desktop features. Do you
know how to fix it? Thanks, Mark

John Rizzo hit it.

Your problem is most likely associative hatches using ADT objects for their
boundaries. An example would be using walls as associative hatch boundaries,
but it can happen with other things as well. Go to the XREF's in which this
occurs and remove the boundary associativity. In the future, you can use
BPOLY to generate the boundary and use the resulting pline as your hatch
boundary. It isn't associative, but you won't get the problem you're
currently experiencing either.

Do you mean that the ADT object is in the X-ref, but the hatching is in the
current dwg? Or do you mean that in the X-ref there is some hatching that
uses ADT objects as boundaries?

What about the ADT wall object that has hatching defined as part of the wall
style? For example, a concrete wall that has a concrete hatch pattern
between the two lines that represent the wall faces. Is that a problem?
Thanks for your help. Mark

Yes. I believe that either of these can cause the behavior you describe.

No. That is the way to hatch wall objects. Technically, it's not a hatch
pattern object, so it is not associative. It is a display component of the
wall object. A fundamentally different thing.

Have dealt with this 1 as well - just yesterday I had to fix 3 nexted drawings.

First thing people do is hatch by picking points and they leave dimensions and what all crossing the hatched objects and so pick around them - making them part of the boundery.
I hate that. Then the erase or edit a dimension or note and the hatch spills into the whole modelspace environment or whatever and AutoCAD rightly says - Are you sure you want me to hatch this?
Also bad habit is when users are in a sheet and pic points forcing AutoCAD to go to the xref's to determine a boundary - if any of the object in the xref - change or are erased etc - the hatch boundary must be recalculated when the sheet is next opened - BINGO - Are you sure you want to do this?

When hatching over an xref - BPoly is your friend - i.e. make a local boundary.
When hatching in general - use a closed boundary (select objects) versus picking points - and ALWAYS turn off everything not associated with the boundary.

By following these practices I have never had this problem - but I fix it for a lot of people.

This seems like a reasonable request--Is it possible?

Hello,

OK I have seen this before but I can not recall what the issue was. I have
one of our computers asking on certain files Do you really want to do this?
over and over when you open up the file. It is entirely possible it is a
setting in the options as the computer is from a user that was rather well
known for unique options settings. I can just do a clean install and get it
back to normal if there is not an easy answer.

The computer seems to be having a lot of fatal errors and corrupt files, not
sure if that is related or not.

Thanks,
Evan

I was just going to post something very simular to this. We have a drawing
that asks the very same thing. It's a drawing that is xrefing a base plan.
If you let the computer run through its commands and say yes or no to the
question, it seems like it takes a copy of the base plan, binds it, then
explodes it. And it's not just one computer. I had a user call me and I
tried it and did the same thing. So far this is the only instance that I'm
aware of. The funny thing is the first time it happened, I still had ADT2.0
(We are right in the middle of switching to ADT3.3) and it opened up just
fine???

This happens in drawings that have associative hatches in them.

One way to prevent the message is to use Quick Select to select all Hatches
where the Associative property is Yes
Once selected use the Properties window to change the value to No.

(Thanks to Chad for telling me this one a few days ago)

don't know if this will help in 2000-02, but in r14 there was a
non-published system variable called "QAFLAGS" which would end all annoying
"are you sure?" statements when the value was set to 2.

Dwane,

A few users have complained about associative hatch causing a "bind" of the
xref. Can you duplicate this? If so, can you please email the files to me
and let me know exactly what I need to do to duplicate the problem?

Thanks,
Scott
