Dimensions don't add up

I have a drawing that has two strings of dimensions set at 1/16" precision.
The inner string adds up and displays a
different overall dimension when compared to the overall dimension string.
They are off by 1/8".

Any ideas

It's due to the rounding.

Consider this simple addition: 7.8 + 4.7 + 3.6 = 16.1

Now round the display of every number to the nearest integer: 8 + 5 + 4 =
16 ??

Does that explain what's occurring? Switch your units to Engineering and 8
significant digits. You'll certainly see some dimensions that are NOT exact
16th's.

Which is one reason why you never close your dimension strings...

and another reason for absolute accuracy when you're "just shoving walls around",
which is easier with a "nudge" routine (something familiar to former MAC cad
users) set to an exact unit such as 1/2".

I have one such routine for acad - created by some whizbang programmer over in
the customization NG a year or so back.

then why not just use snap and set it at 1/2"?

personally, I can't stand having snap set - because interferes w/ osnaps.
theoretically, this would solve the problem, though.... twelve ways to accomplish
anything w/ Autocad - none intuitive.

Aw, it is not that bad. One thing I really like about AutoCAD is the
intuitive command abbreviations....L for line, E for erase, Z for Zoom, and
so on. I have a friend who tried to get me to use DataCAD. Talk about
perverse non-intuitive commands.

All I remember of it now is that to zoom I had to use a menu on the left and
it had a box with four icons around it and to zoom in or out you had to pick
the right one. To draw a line you had to go to a different menu and then to
another menu....Maybe I just don't remember it but it was way to difficult
for me.

well then, how about editing text or attributes? not too intuitive. after some
minor customization - sure... anyway, I don't wish to stray on a tangent.. it's
hard at first, but smooth sailing thereafter.

Jerry:

Since Autodesk killed the flatland variable, it is also possible that you
have different Z axis point locations for your dimensions. I have noted this
happening more than one in my drawings.. even though I'm trying to force
everything to zero z. I finally created a toolbar macro that always gets the
xy0 of a point.
