ADT4 trial version cd?

I noticed that Autodesk has made the AutoCAD 2004 30-day trial cd available but I dont see anything for ADT4...is there one and I am missing it, or is there one coming out anytime soon?
We have the program in our office but we will not be installing it for quite awhile, if at all...the determining factor just might be getting to scope out the trial version and seeing what it can do.
I have been keeping up with all the topics in this group, looked into the stb. verses ctb.situation,(we LOVE our CTB'S!),and I need to see for myself if this product is what our office needs.

Hi -- I am lost. here. Why do you need the trial if you have the real one, which you could always install and uninstall? If you have CDs for the real one, you see that it takes 2 to hold it. As for whether it's good, since you have read back through this group, you see pretty much a complete rave, other than the file format issue. Since you have it, so cost is not the issue, perhaps be a bit more flexible than you are sounding, and jump in. Bob

Gee Bob, you missed this person's question
completely, and answered it with questions and some mild smarm.
Also, responding in caps is the same as shouting (see "save to
adt").  I hope your just having a bad day.  We newbies in the
group would like to think you old timers understand ng ettiquette ...
Keeps things civil and tends to keep the timid ones poking their heads out of
the manhole without fear of getting run over .

I'm sorry I dont have your answer Shelz, but I
understand your reluctance to roll it out.  My personal experience has not
been "rave".  I've had alot of frustration.  As to determining if it
is even what your office needs, I can tell you that for the money, you will be
getting a full featured, complex program that can do almost anything,
literally.  I think that is it's greatest strength, if that's what you
need.  On the other hand, I also think that is it's greatest
weakness.

P.S., I hope someone can answer you in simple
terms.

regards

Bob,

>Hi -- I am lost. here. Why do you need the trial if you have the
>real one, which you could always install and uninstall?

I have to agree with Bill's message, you're too quick off the draw on
this one! The person asking sounds enthusiastic, but may not be the
"cad manager" or "IT" person that can install and uninstall at his own
whim. However, if'n he got his hands on a trial cd (that was his
question... remember?) then he might be able to slip in a quick (oops
pardon me it's not too quick... 2 cd's) before the cad manager / IT
person found out (wink / grin). Then do some before or after hours
scoping it out... serve up "20 reasons to upgrade" to management and
yahoo it's upgrade time. Or, he could ask the cad manager to install
the trial cd without questions of licensing (see second to last
paragraph below).

>As for whether it's good, since you have read back through this group.
>you see pretty much a complete rave, other than the file format issue.

That's an assumption! There are lots of issues involved in the
upgrade decision... following numbering sequence is NOT by priority,
just what comes to mind: File format is one, current hardware is two,
Cost is three (he doesn't say they're on subscription), training cost
is four, yada yada yada.

And, are there licensing issues involved? If'n they crack the new cd
wrap and install are they bound by the 60 day license legal shmegel to
uninstall the old? If they put in trial cd's I bet there are no 60
day countdowns to uninstall the old.

Now... what was his question? Trial cd's for Adt 2004? I don't know,
but someone else here may, or perhaps he could call a couple of
resellers in his area if no-one answers!

Wow, thank you for all the responses!
I would like to explain that my office pays to have all our upgrades installed AND uninstalled. The company that does this is located hundreds of miles away (small town here),and to have the program installed...and then find we dont care for it...and then have them come and uninstall (because of course our ADT 3.3 would go POOF! in 60 days)would be so much more hassle and $$ than to just have the cd(s) to play with....See?

Sorry about the confusion 🙂

Hey, sorry if I ruffled you, but it never occured to me that someone could not personally install ADT2004 on one machine to try it out-- which is what I meant. The real CDs can be used as the trial CDs-- if you dont authorize, you have 30 days. (I did not realize this was not completely obvious, since I do all my own here.) The way I read it was that he was missing out, waiting for the trial, when he could solve it in a few minutes himself. I did NOT type in caps--if it shows that way on your newsreader, we have touched another subject on which I am ignorant. Hey, I am trying to help folks get to the bottom of problems: I would rather err on the side of looking foolish than not be attempting to help. Bob

Where can I get a job like that?  I'll
install/uninstall software all day if I knew someone would pay for that service
;)

I would imagine though that the process is practically
identical whether demo or production, the software will need to be installed and
uninstalled.  Just because the demo expires, doesn't mean that it
'uninstalls' itself, at least with none of the demos I have ever
used.

Dive in and take a chance, man.  If you do no trust
the rave reviews and the overwhelming enthusiam from the NG, than obviously you
will need to simply 'find out for yourself'.

I'm afraid I'm with Bob on this one, jump
in!!!

I will say this though, you must have soooome will-power
to be able to have the software right in front of you with out installing
it.  I'd be bouncing off the walls!

Good luck,

Bob, you have been very helpful, and yes I will install the program now to try it without authorizing it...da boss here is big on professional installs, with our server and plotters - it gets perty complex...
Now I can delve into version 4 and not worry about losing 3.3 (which I think is NOT a good thing Autodesk).

I will send a post soon to let you know if we all are "raving" about it. 🙂

WA-HOO!  You go Shell!

I manage 7 seats, and, yes, it can be complex.  I
have yet to met an IT person who understands the logistics of ADT well enough to
provide a thorough service for an install.  I work with folks here in
the NG for guidance and security.  Currently only 3 of us are running ADT4
and I am configuring their machines as I work out MY configuration.  We are
working from the server and I have been able to (almost) seamlessly provide
printer, plot style and content configurations without running my self
ragged.  Admittedly, this could be a much more difficult task with more
people with more legacy drawings in the works, but such is not my
case.

I am curious about the details of the 60 day
limit.  I would think that the 60 days started when you received the
software, not when it was installed.  Can someone confirm
this?

Cool! I had to present a demo of the new features Saturday to moderately experienced users, who all liked it. The User Interface documentation is good, and the posts in this group even better. I takes a little while to get used to the palettes/Content Browser/setup thing when you are used to just grabbing tools on the fly. The grips alone are almost worth the upgrade. Bob

What? You installed the software and did not read and memorize the entire EULA? 🙂 From the ADT2004 US/Canada EULA:

Upgrades: If this Software is labeled as an upgrade (“New Version”) to software previously licensed to you (“Previous Version”), you must destroy all copies of the Previous Version, including any copies resident on your hard disk drive, and upon request by Autodesk return any Documentation to Autodesk or your Autodesk Authorized Reseller within sixty (60) days of acquiring the New Version. Autodesk reserves the right to require you to show satisfactory proof that the Previous Version has been destroyed. In the event Autodesk or an authorized third-party in connection with the Software licensed to you hereunder provides you additional software that supplements or extends the Software, that additional software shall be subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement unless otherwise specified at the time of delivery.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may retain and need not destroy the Previous Version and may use the Previous Version solely if necessary for the purposes of (1) installing the New Version hereby licensed and (2) for archival (backup) purposes in order to reinstall the New Version hereby licensed if the initial installation fails. Under no circumstances may you operate the Previous Version.

I am not a lawyer, but that sounds like date of acquisition [disk in hand], not date of installation, would start the 60-day timer.

... and David, I am not a cop. but I think there is some allowance for practices of loyal customers. If Adesk were being the Enforcement Gestapo, they would have gone after all those big users who have R14 in the machines and ADT3.3 in boxes since January, 2002!!(LOL) This guy has other machines with the previous release to rely on. Except for the file compatibility issue, or insistence on customizing back to the Stone Age, I can't see anyone not loving 2004. Bob

Now I'm the one lost. My boss is running ADT 3.0 on his office machine, where I go to run it. It was an outright purchase, so no ADT 4.0 cd's laying around.

I'm convinced ADT 4.0 is the way to go, but he won't decide until he sees it. I've been trying to get demo CDs also, but DTI says they're not available yet.

So, I join the question. Will there be a Demo, and WHEN?

Good question, and a shame the marketing effort is not going into this really strong ADT release, rather than into the unRipe program! Maybe you or your reseller knows someone who can let you try it out at their place, or borrow their laptop which has it. Find the archived webcasts for a start. Perhaps there will be demos CDs by the time Paul Aubin's new book comes out, late in the spring -- starting with the book would be smart. Bob
