ADT Corrupted my file -- HELP!!!!!

Can someone please see if they can save this file in R14 or get it to somehow work???

I was saving the file and halfway through saving it gave me a fatal error. After that, I couldn't open the file at all. I then went to the BAK file of the same name, and after renaming it to DWG -- it wouldn't open this one either!!! So I THEN went to the Temp folder and got the autosave, and that is corrupt too. All my other folders open fine. I don't know what happened - and all 3 copies of this file (DWG,BAK,SV$) are corrupt.

I am putting it in customer files now under the heading CORRUP FILE ADT3

Hi,

I was able to open all of the drawings that you
posted.

Do you have SP2 installed?

Also, when I opened the drawing, it couldn't find
some fonts and the xref'd drawing. I have seen corrupt fonts cause crashes
before so you might want to check that out. Have you tried opening the drawing
without the xref?

Here is a dump of my command line after I opened
your drawing:

Opening an AutoCAD 2000 format
file.
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [ARCHSTYL.SHX].
Substituting
[simplex.shx] for [HM-HD.SHX].
Substituting [simplex.shx] for

Substituting [simplex.shx] for [archquik.shx].

Resolve Xref "HW93-103":
I:\Dayton\Heatherwood\93Hw\HW93-103REV.dwg
Can't find
I:\Dayton\Heatherwood\93Hw\HW93-103REV.dwg
Regenerating
layout.
Regenerating model.

As you can see, I subsitituted simplex.shx for the
fonts that I don't have on my machine.

If you can help us narrown this down, that would be
great.

Regards,

Scott

Thanks for replying...

What is SP2?
And how do I open a file without an xref loading?

Maybe it could be the xref causing the crash. I think maybe this is it because whenever I try to open the file, it opens almost all the way -- to where you can see everything on the screen and think it loaded fine - and then comes the fatal error.

Does that help narrow it down?

I tried replacing the fonts and that hasn't helped so far...

It's possible that xrefs are causing crash. To open without xrefs, move
xrefs into location out of autocad search path. If you don't know what
standard search path is, just make some directory, say c:\tmp1 and move
xrefs there, then try to open this drawing again. AutoCAD will not find the
xrefs and if they cause the crash, your drawing will open fine. If this is
the case, go back to your xrefs and recover each of them, this might find
some problems in them and fix it.

SP2 is the latest Service Pack...

If you wish to download this, open AutoCAD Today,
expand the PointA area, and check the Live Update box on the top
left.

it was the xref. Even though the xref file itself is fine (i can open it with no problem) - it won't load into the other drawing without crashing it. at this point I don't even care, I'm just glad to have the file usable.

Thanks again

That's a looong "thank you" 😉 you're
welcome.

Run Recover on faulty xref, it might reveal and fix
the bug that's causing main dwg to crash. If you know a bit about DXF, you can
export faulty xref as DXF then import DXF back into empty drawing. AutoCAD does
very thorough check when reading DXF, it might point to errors that can be fixed
with text editor.

If you post the xref file to the customer files
newsgroup, I'll take a look at it if you want.
