2005 fields

I'm trying (many times in vain) to get our company to utilize some of the
"new" features (yeah, I realize we're already two versions behind, but
they're new features to everyone here!) of acad2005.

The one I'm messing with today is fields.

I've got our standard titleblock that we all use, and I want to make the
sheet number attribute be read by a field in the bottom of our standard
section bubble block.
I get it all set up and it works fine. Once I wblock it and insert it into a
drawing it refuses to do anything except "###". If I explode the section
bubble block and edit the field is says "The object referenced by the field
is not a valid object".... >:-|

On the other hand, I can reference *that* field and make the sheet number on
the titleblock into a field and have *both* of them reference back to the
"drawing properties" for a drawing and they work fine.
..only trouble with that method is our stick-in-the-mud Civil cad monkeys
will complain about having to go to the "drawing properties" box to edit the
sheet number rather than just dbl-clicking on the titleblock. 😕

A work around for the Civil peeps benefit would be to figure out a way
around this (entry from the help file):
"Field Value - Displays the current value of the field, or displays an
empty string (----) if the field value is invalid.
..Is it possible to turn off the four dashes if there is no field value?

also, in addition to this I guess I'd need to know if the way fields work
has changed at all in 2006 or 2007. No sense going thru all this if it'll
only break when we update in a year.

Thanks for any help! 🙂

Paul

..ok, I've managed to solve the first part of this problem (the part with
the section bubble not updating). Now all I need to do is to somehow get the
"four dashes" to go away when there's no field value.
Anyone????

(also still wondering if the functionality of fields has changed at all
beyond acad2005)

It will be better if you also post how you solved the issue.
Thanks

no problem...
I eventually realized that the reason that the detail bubble wouldn't work
after wblocking it was that once it was in its own drawing file there was no
value in the object it was referencing. So then I went into the detail
bubble.dwg file and gave that reference object a value, then it worked fine
when I inserted it into another drawing.

As for the part with trying to stop the (----) from appearing, I never did
get that fixed. Instead I wound up working around it so that the Civil
people could still use their attributes and the rest of us could use the
field function... rather than substituting the field for the attribute I
simply added a field to the attribute. If you don't edit it manually it
works as a field, if you edit it manually it works as a simple attribute.
(also wound up applying this to the detail bubble as well)

Not perfect, but it works...
