JPG background color

First off, I am new to Raster Design and AutoCad.

We selected Raster Design since it could handle grayscale (8-bit) images. We have many existing drawings that could not be scanned as 1-bit since we would lose so much data.

I can open the 8-bit, grayscale jpg file in Raster Design just fine. In some cases we will add text or lines and then convert the vector to raster and keep just the jpg file as a single file.

Other times, we will need to create hybrid files; having both a vector (dwg) and raster (jpg) images.
This is where the question comes in....
If I want to delete a portion of the jpg file that will be replaced with new work or simply left blank, I am using Image-Remove-Rectangular Region. After selecting the region to be deleted, what appears is a black region in the middle of my grayscale image where there once was the piece I removed. When I print this, I get just that; a black region in the middle of my image.
I used the BACKGROUND command line option and tried to change the background to white, but this did not solve the problem.
How can I make the region I delete from the jpg image not appear as a black section on the drawing?

Also, if you can give me any other advice about working with the jpg drawings I would appreciate it.

I create a REM region slightly larger than the area removed in
a blank area of the image. Copy this over the area that was removed and then
merge it into the Raster image. There may be other ways but this is how I have
dealt with it.

Try first using the RBACKGROUND command then using
either "IRUBRECT" or the Rem Region delete. You may also want to turn on
transparency for the image.
