I think it's in the readme or help file somewhere:
The default setting is the optimal memory setting. It automatically
calculates how much memory is available and how much to use.
The memory setting is really only for limiting the amount of memory
used. It cannot now be increased over the optimal setting (as opposed
to older versions where that setting was actually used to increase the
memory usage).
