Were these drawings ever opened in AutoCAD 2000 or 2000i and Saved As
R14s?

Try going to:

http://support01.autodesk.com/ViewDownload.asp

put in "bind" or "bindptch.arx" and select Go
downloading bindptch.arx and read bindptch.txt

Also going to:
http://support01.autodesk.com/ViewAnswerworks.asp
and asking questions sometimes helps.

Lastly, You also might want to go to http://discussion.autodesk.com and
select AutoCAD and use BIND or XREF as a keyword to see other
discussions on the topic, as there are also unnamed objects that can
also cause problems. Good luck.

If the drawing you are trying to bind was created in Acad 2000, you'll get
an invalid message. You'll need to download "bindptch.arx" from Autodesk's
website.

Have any of you experienced:
;; Warning: Invalid block name "" found.
;; ...dwg needs recovery.
;; xref loaded.

If a dwg (say x.dwg) has this particular 'invalid "" block name' - it causes
the parent file (some file that xrefs x.dwg) to crash when attempting to
detach x.dwg.

any clues?

Thanks in advance for any help.
