Vertical orientation cable tray not possible in Revit-MEP

When we enquired for Electrical (Cable trays) objects modelling in Plant3d, we were told that REVIT MEP is the solution for that. We blindly purchased one licence this year.

While started routing the cable tray, we needed to route some trays in vertical orientation. Find no option and taken up with forum and find a reply that the routing of vertical cable tray is not possible rite now in Revit.

Our cable tray routing mostly will be in vertical orientation. So, we cant use the software anymore. Again manual drafting to be done.

Sales ppl of Autodesk made my head down finally.

I'm assuming your using 2014? It can model vertical tray AFAIK

I just tested it in 2014 and there are cable tray fittings that you can put in the vertical.

The document meaning about vertical is height.

The routing of cable tray have two methods.

Horizontal (0 deg)
Vertical (0 deg)

Tried but no option in Revit MEP.

Does this video help?

No, the video shows completely about horizontal cable tray routing.

See the picture you will get clarity. The view is a front view.

Attached another image for more clarity. I am wondering, how come the Revit MEP is without the provision of cable tray routing in vertical orientation. Everywhere Incomplete.

I can model in vertical in Revit, I placed a tee, then used the Rotate Grips to put it in vertical, then ran cable tray from that, as attached.

I tried the function you had mentioned. But the ladder cable tray visibility is not there if I route after the TEE. It reduce the size of tray and increases the width height.

However, eventhough its not a perfect solution, I can use as a workaround this. Thanks, as no other in Revit aswell as in subscription centre I got a reply for a workaround.

I request you to take up with Revit development team this case.

Vertically mounted cable tray is required for many of our clients in plants that have issues with dust control.  We cannot use Revit or Plant 3D on these projects because of this issue.  Looked into a few other products that can do verticaly mounted tray but would like to stay with Autodesk products.  We have moved back to PDMS for our plant design untill this gets resolved.

I think, just a thought, this trays can be modeled in plant 3d by custom component method. I have done the same with ducting components before. Not sure but could be of help to you guys.

I am trying to replicate this workaround, but Revit will not run the ct properly. How, exactly, did you do this?

I used the Plantpart convert, model each "fitting( piece of the cable tray)" in Autocad then convert it to plant 3D , like that.

Bit of a thread resurrection here, but I though if anyone's watching this thread, the following might be of use:

http://bimfosser.blogspot.in/2014/10/cable-tray-run-does-run-along-wall.html

The above link shows how to get verical, wall aligned cable tray, which goes a good way towards the a solution. It isn't complete though as I've not figured out a way to connect independant vertically aligned components without Revit flipping it all about.

C'mon Autodesk... 🙂

This Cable Tray App is written for Autodesk Plant 3D using Python scripts and can place cable tray in any orientation. It is also available on the Autodesk Exchange App site.

If you are using Plant3D give my python-based catalog a try, you can customize and create your own size tray-elements:
