updating .dwt files

I updated a dwt template file.  When I open up an existing P&ID that uses this template, it still has the old template in it.  How do I get the new dwt template into existing drawings?  Do I have to rename it and then re-path it?

Thank you.

Did you check your Project Setup and verify if the DWT path is pointed to the updated DWT you created?

Yes.  That's why I asked if maybe I need to rename it and then re-path it.  I just updated the one that it is already pathed to.  I just assumed it would pick up and change the template but it doesn't.

A .dwt file is used to create a new .dwg file.  After the .dwg is created, the .dwt file has no effect on it as there is no link between the two.

There are various ways to manually copy objects and styles from a .dwt to a .dwg.  The DesignCenter palette (Ctl+2) may be the easiest.

So are you saying once I create a P&ID that has a certain .dwt file pathed to it, when I update that .dwt file it won't update in the existing P&ID?  I just have to copy in the new titleblock?  That just doesn't seem right to me.

That is correct.  A drawing does not really have a .dwt 'pathed to it'.  The .dwt is only used when initially creating the drawing. After that, it has no bearing on the drawing.  All new drawings created with your new .dwt will have your updated titleblock but existing drawings will not be affected.

The easiest way (without programming) I know to redefine the existing title blocks is to use DesignCenter. See this video for step-by-step:

Note: There may be better ways to do this - this is just my 2 cents 😉

Thank you.  I can't get any sound from that video but I will explore design center and see if I can't figure out how to do it myself. Thanks again for your help.  I wasted a lot of time trying to figure that one out.

Hi guys.

I have a very intriguing question to you all.

In Plant 3D 2024, in new projects, when I'm creating a new drawing I'm also selecting a .DWT template file, to be used as a template to the new drawing. It contains my tibleblocks with attributes.

The bizzarre thing that's happening here and I'd like to ask for your help is that, instead of creating a new drawing in the current project using the selected template, Plant 3D is closing the current project, opening the project used to create that template, and creating the new drawing inside that project and not inside the project I was currently working with. How is that possible?! Was the .DWT file supposed to carry such information as original project name where it was created and also actions to create new drawing inside that project only?! That's a behaviour that cuts all the purpose of existence of a drawing template, since it's supposed to be a template to new drawing in any Project, not only for the project it was created in!

How can I fix that and have a .DWT template file that will work in any new project?

Thank you
