Currently the Dynamic Pipe Palette is automatically updated from the spec that is being used. You could manually rename the Dynamic Pipe Spec to another name. Simply right-click over the Dynamic Pipe Spec tab and select Rename Palette. This would save the palette and then allow you to change the descriptions. However, the images could not be changed.

Also, whenever you switch to another spec the Dynamic Pipe Spec would be recreated.

I am new to Plant 3D and this is now a serious issue for me as well.  When I started developing specs for clients I used their part decscriptions with the expectation the descriptions that appeared in the dynamic tool pallette could be embedded into the spec by specifying what collumn/s to use.  Then upon loading the dynamic menu I am looking at arbitrary values pulled from the spec table, no way to control or specify what values just whatever the softwatre decided.  As a result I cannot readily recognize what the parts are from the menu.

(dynamic pallette)

FLANGE, SO, FL, RF, 150, NTE

(actual long description in spec)

FLG, SO, CL 150 RF, STL A105, STD WT BORE

I spent the better part of 20 years programming and customizing for AutoCAD.  I spent the better half of the day trying to find why this behaviour works so eratically and uncontrollably and how to customize it.  If there is a way could your team give me a treasure map and a shovel ?  If there isn't then c'mon guys seriously ? I hope the answer isn't I have to go through the menu item by item and change the properties for each menu item when this work has already been done in the spec table and could easily be controlled and customized by one simple CSV in the spec editor.

We disable the Dynamic Spec Palette (PLANTDYNAMICTOOLPALETTE = Disable) and use the Spec Viewer palette (PLANTSPECVIEW). You can view your Family Long Description and Size Long Description on it.

Hi Patpat78, What a coinsidence that we almost have the same user name... about your question, I think its better to Use the spec viewer which What we are doing since 2012 version. Well, that's just a suggestion since i am not familiar using the dynamic pallet for a had added to our standard procedure to not Use it by the designers. Hope you find the answer by other users here as well, thanks.

Hello 90tbird and others,

it is now 2023 and the work around is as mentioned - you will need to go through Spec Editor and adjust the description. You can simply copy the additional info and put into the Short Description field as that is one of the items that the Dynamic Palette looks at - AutoCAD Plant 3D: Tool Palette spec component naming convention (autodesk.com)

The following catalog properties are used to make up the Tool Palette component name that is displayed in the Dynamic Tool Palette:

  • Short Description
  • End Type
  • Facing
  • Pressure Class
  • Schedule
  • (Spec Name)

But obviously doing so will affect all other instances that use the Short Description from the spec editor. So using the Spec Viewer (especially in 2024 version) is a better alternative, as there are filter options now available and better sorting of sizes.
