Problem insulating pipe

Can I only insulated half a pipe run? I have a pipe going outside and would like to add 3 in of insulation to the outdoor section and not the indoor section.

I have yet to find a very easy way to do this.  What I've done thus far, is add a weld where you want to start the 3" insulation, then disconnect the pipe that has the 3" insulation.  Easy way is to select that pipe, move it up on the Z axis, add the insulation, then move it back and reconnect it. I'll let you know if I find a better way.
