P&ID Export to AutoCad

We have found that P&ID files created in P3D do not make very good AutoCad files. We will need to provide P&ID drawings to clients who will likely only have AutoCad.

I hoped that applying the Plant 3D Object Enabler to AutoCad would make the files work better - no improvment after adding the OB. In fact, the enabler did not seem to change anything.

I tried "ExportToAutocad" and got the result I needed.

I would need to be able to run a batch export routine to do all the project P&IDs. Is there a built in way to run the export routine for all the files in a batch format?

Is there a better way to get a good AutoCad file from P3D?

The Plant 3D Object Enablers allow the 3D drawings to load into vanilla
AutoCAD as they do in Plant 3D. We do not have the equivalent for P&ID but
it is on our list for a future release. There is no built in feature for
batching ExportToAutoCAD outside of normal AutoCAD scripting. You can use
"-ExportToAutoCAD" to invoke a command line interface that is scriptable.

Thank you for the information.

Any Idea when the OB for P&ID will be available? Next Release?

Bittlelum1,

We currently don't have plans to make a P&ID object enabler and I'd like to
better understand your need for one.

Our thinking is there are a few ways you'd want to share a P&ID with someone
else.

Suppose you are in the middle of an engineering project and you want to
share a P&ID with someone who doesn't have AutoCAD P&ID. They can't change
the P&ID and maintain the data but they can view it, plot it, or mark it up.

If they make mark ups, you can take back the P&ID and make the required
changes. If you open an AutoCAD P&ID in plain AutoCAD, you'll get proxy
objects that should look identical to the regular objects, but they can't be
changed. This is probably what you've been seeing.

Alternatively, if the person you are working with has AutoCAD P&ID, they can
change it and make edits that maintain the data, and return it to you.

If you need to deliver a P&ID that is fully editable by the person you're
sharing the drawing with, but doesn't have the data, use the Export to
AutoCAD function. We think this is most useful when you need to deliver a
drawing to your customer at the end of a project. The P&ID must live on and
you can't rely on the customer having AutoCAD P&ID to be able to edit it.

Do these scenarios match how you are using AutoCAD P&ID? Are we missing some
scenario where having an object enabler would be useful?

Peter:

Thank you for your reply.

We have figured out the the Export to Acad produces the AutoCad file the client wants. What is still desired is the ability to batch process the Export command from within the program. As it is, you can get the Export command only with a right click on a file in the project browser and select the command. This is greyed out if more than one drawing is selected.
