Looking for a very detailed tutorial for creating a pipe spec.

As the subject.

I need a very detailed tutorial for creating a pipe spec.  I am using custom blocks for sch 40 pipe fittings.

there is no complete catalog out there.  I have already looked at the spears and GF catalogs

and they are both missing key fittings.

I already have all the fittings modeled up, and have created my own catalog but it has nothing but issues.

I can only assume I am making some mistake.

The catalog builder is not really an option since there are just too many dimensions to type in for a few hundred models.

I use typically between 1/2" to 24"  All Sch 40 pvc.

cap / coupling / union / cross / 45 ell / 45 street ell / 90 ell / 90 street ell / 90 long sweep ell / flanges / saddles ( similar to a tee reduciton fitting ) / concentric reducers / flush bushings / butterfly valves / ball valves / wyes.

of course some of these are a subset of the 1/2" to 24" nd.

16 fitting types  and a few hundred fittings... typing in all the dimensions for parametric modeling would take a very very long time, and there is no parametric model for Flush bushings either.

I am just getting frustrated with the errors I am getting... Any help would be appreciated.

This place has some really good info that helped me understand how to use custom content in a catalog and then create the spec.  I have yet to find a complete tutorial on how to create my specs from custom content and catalogs.  But through trial, error and PDO tutorials,  I finally figured it out.  If you spend a couple of hours going through PDO's tutorials on Plant 3D ISO's, you should be able to get what you want.

The one suggestion I have is It was good be able to go through and copy a spec and catalog and use that as a starting point, but I usally ran into too many issues with the specs not working corectlly(which it sounds like that is where you are at).  You may be better off starting from scratch on your spec if you haven't dose so already.

If you go through the other tutorials on PDO's website and look through the Autodesk Help files and videos, They should help.  Ursala has a few decent videos also.

I hope this helps while out a little.

Thanks for the feedback.

John where are you located?  We provide training classes that can get you hands on time with an instructor to walk you through the basics.

As wdvaden mentioned, we don't provide comprehensive materials on our site since that's our day job :).  However, we are evaluating that and may provide some sort of subscription content in the future.

wdvaden  yeah I have been through the PDO pages a few times and I will check out the videos.  I don't think I have seen them.

dave.wolfe I am in courtenay, B.C. - Vancouver Island.  I have remade the spec a few times.. it's the little things that are getting to me now.. Going over the basics would not hurt - it never does.  It may be more of a problem solving issue right now.

One of the big issues is that "Can't find symbol for specified part" error... but all the custom blocks are in the same file, converted at  the same time, and have worked in a previous project... bu all of a sudden, parts are missing from this one.

Are you still having the issue with the error message you are getting "Can't find symbol for the specified part"? So, this is happening with a new project you started?

If my post answers your question, please mark it as an Accepted Solution, so that others can find answers quickly!

Yes. This is after trying to fix the spec and testing it, again. And a different part is missing from the last project.

I am also getting spec update notifications fairly regularly, but the spec has not been changed.

There is an issue with custom content after migrating. During the migration process a new folder will be created, "Migrated Content 2_0" or "Migrated Content 3_0" (depending on if you're migrating from 2011 to 2012 or from 2012 up to 2013)

If you leave the folders as is after migration, the catalog doesn't know where the custom blocks are stored because they are down in the migrated content subfolder. I always copy mine back up to the level they were at before the migration to resolve the issue. (see below)

The reason for the migrated content folder is so that is does not overwrite any existing content, but that doesn't mean you can't rename or move the out-of-the-box content folders and replace it with your migrated content.

@Jason,

I have already rebuilt the entire catalog, so I will not be trying to migrate it again, but I will keep that in mind when 2014 comes out.

The issue was all the fittings 16" to 24" vanishing from the spec.

in the spec catalog, they showed up, but when I tried to delete the 16" to 24" fittings, it would not update or save with the revised sizes.

I have a work around, but I think the catalog just may be corrupt, I made another size spec from 16" to 24" and i have the fittings again.

Very nice I was wonder if it did that but hadn't got a chance to look into it.
