Control Valves and Instruments

What is the typical work around for there not being an "Instrument" section in the specs? How do I get automated valves/control valves, and misc inline instruments into a spec?

To add valves into a spec, use the Spec Editor and open a Valves Catalog. Select valves from the catalog and “Add to Spec” button at the middle of the Spec Sheet Editor.

Within the Spec Editor, in the same session, you can switch to a different catalog and continue to add pipe, fittings, and other components, including custom components you’ve created into a spec.

Also, a useful reference document can be download here this AU Classes-on-Demand on Spec and Catalog Editors:

I've created specs and catagols and regular valves and I'm fairly comfortable with that process. However, Automated Control Valves and in-line Instruments should be displayed on iso's differently than regular valves. They should show up in a different section of the BOM and should be calleded out on the iso with a tag number in a ballon. There is no way, that I can figure out, to get them to show up this way if I just lump them in with the rest of the regular valves...

Hello Autodesk....

Is there any way to differenciate control valves and inline instruments from regular valves. Be it in the spec somehow or some other setting in the model? Data Manager? Anything?

I don’t believe Plant 3D 2014 currently has the specific functionality you’re seeking here. I encourage you to provide feedback and a product enhancement recommendation at this link where it will be considered for future a future release:  http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=1109794

Hi,

I don't know if I'm missing something here, but if you set the Content Iso Symbol Definition property to "SKEY=II??,TYPE=INSTRUMENT" for the Instrument/Control Valve, it will be handled correctly during Iso generation - you'll need to modify your Iso template to include an Instrument section in the BOM, otherwise you should be good to go.

Incidentally, you can create an Instrument or InlineInstrument Part Family in a Plant 3D catalog quite easily.

Please check out this link if you would like further details. Add An Instrument Family To A Plant 3D Catalog

Could anyone explain me, what is the reason for Plant 3D to classify control valves as Instruments, not Valves?

Thanks

Because they require communication with the control system and many times, especially with throttling valves, they are uniquely engineered.
