Many of you have been anticipating the release of our AutoCAD Plant 3D beta. The great news is that is is going live on Friday, February 5!

By participating in the beta program, you have a great opportunity to influence the final implementation of features and to identify critical problems with the best chance of early resolution. Your active participation as a core site will be essential to our goal of delivering an outstanding product.

Given the extensive installed base of AutoCAD implementations I am hoping someone has developed an approach to creating P&ID drawings with AutoCAD that include the ability to automatically extract equipment lists and associated attributes.

The idea is that there is a process that an engineer follows during preparation of the P&ID drawing that enables the use of automation. The automation would process the AutoCAD drawing and export equipment lists and other information into an XML or other consistent format that can then be used with PDM systems. Ideally, since this is one of our requirements, the process would work seamlessly with PTC's Windchill PLM system.

If you know of such an approach that may include customization or documentation that describes a process, please contact me via EMail.

Please take a look at AutoCAD Plant 3D or AutoCAD P&ID. The P&ID
functionality has the ability to extract lists of components, such as
equipment lists, from the drawing. You can find out more info at
www.autodesk.com/autocadpid
