when a duct passes through a wall...?

when a duct or a pipe passes through a wall... and you have an ADT 3D file representing walls doors and windows etc... what, if anything, are folks doing to depict this? -- Cut out an area of the wall in the ADT file? is there an automatic wall cut out process through ABS? Or does everyone just leave the wall whole and assume that everyone gets it that there has to be a hole there in order for that duct, pipe etc to pass through? Or am I the only schmuck building walls, windows and doors as well as my mep systems? I'd like to know what you all are doing as a regular practice. thanks for all input on this topic.

Hi Bil -

I can't answer as to what everyone is doing, but when I was still designing,
we typically just left the wall in place. The only time that we would worry
about cutting it out would be if it might affect structural.

Currently there are no automated tools for cutting out holes in the wall, as
walls "typically" 1. Live in a different file. 2. Have a different owner.
The Live in a different file part is something that the technology could
likely overcome. The bigger hurdle is the Have a different owner part. For
most of the customers that we talk to there are defined limits about who
owns and is responsible for what data. The architects don't want the
mechanical people "modifying" their walls, just because a duct runs through
it!!
