What is the best practice for organizing custom parts?

We are in the process of adding parts to our library, and realized that
managing these parts can get out of hand really fast. I am asking for
feed back on how some of you are managing the Mvparts catalog? How do
you separate what is custom and what is out of the box?

I don't know what is the best way, I can tell you my way:
I've created a separate directory within the MvParts directory, called it
smp after my initials, and I'm putting all my MvParts right there.

That is what I am thinking of doing as well. I just want to make sure that there are no consequences for doing it that way, i.e. upgrades... Thanks.

For what it is worth we make a separate profile with an alternate location for MV Parts. We create all of the custom parts there and after they are looked at by a second person they are copied into the main MV Part folders. That gives us a complete copy of the custom content in a separate folder that we can copy it all into the MV Part folder of the new release. I hope this helps you out.

When you setup your own directory with your own parts, management of the
mv-parts is much easier. Since Autocad can connect to an user directory
(Options MEP Catalogs) you can have your parts in one, separate directory
which can be easily identified and it will not be deleted when you uninstall
this and install new version of MEP. In addition, you can connect new MEP to
your directory again and voila! You are ready to go. Provided of course that
Autodesk will not discontinue this nice feature.

I leave the set-up the way Autodesk has it and created folders called "Do Not Use" and stuff the Adesk parts that I don't want my people using in there. Then I create new part that starts w/ my Co's initials. This way I can sort through and they will all be grouped together incase I need to grab them all and import them into a new version of MEP/ABS.
