Moving from AutoCad to AutoCad MEP- templates

We have purchased a Revit Suite that comes with AutoCad MEP I have been using AutoCad MEP just like the same as normal AutoCad but I am now trying to learn everything MEP can do as Revit is not working out. I have downloaded the tutorials but am stuck on the template as I can't see one that helps me set that up. We have a dwt file and a standard dwg file that we have been using for years but MEP won't use this for my template. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I am trying to do the plumbing system tutorial)

An Autocad template alone will not work for MEP. MEP uses different
types of displays, devices, styles, etc. that regular Autocad doesn't
understand. I'd recommend starting with an MEP Template supplied by
Autodesk and inserting your Autocad template into it.

I am not much further ahead of you, but you will need to use an MEP template. You can import your .dwt and .dwg into the Autodesk .dwt and it will import your styles, but it doesn't work to bring all of their catalogs into your templates.
As for layer names, you might be better off excepting the AutoCAD defaults. You can edit layer colors and lineweight, but you will have to modify the layer key style and edit each item one by one. However, once it is edited, it is saved for all projects (or until the next version comes out).
