mechanical pipe add command

Has anyone used the mechanical pipe add command to be used with plumbing
layouts. I was informed by a rep from autodesk that I should try to use this
command with my plumbing layouts and to get that 3d effect. Also the rep
told me about using the place holders. Can someone explaine to me more in
detail what place holders do or can do? I would greatly appreciate any
assistance or comments.

Hi Scott -

There are some people using the piping package for plumbing layouts, but
there is currently very limited content for this type of layout. Items like
sanitary fittings don't currently exist in the piping catalog, so there may
be some "challenges" in laying out waste systems that are completely modeled
without some significant content work.

The concept behind placeholders was that they could be used for initial
layout, when the designer didn't know all of the "required" information
about the system to select the exact type of content that was to be used,
and then easily modify the placeholder content with specific content as the
design progressed.

Scott -

Placeholders are essentially body-less duct and pipe fittings. I think this
will give one line behavior that may get you a step closer to 3D schematic.

To use Placeholders, do the following:

1. Open Pipe Preferences and make sure you have default parts set for the
placeholders.
2. Open PipeAdd
3. Set the Thickness Gauge to Undefined Gauge.

Start drawing pipe - it will be with schematic fittings that have no size
instead of a full bodied pipe. Note that placeholders are fully 3D.
Placeholder elbows, tees, crosses are there, but as Jason notes, however,
there is a lack of placeholder content specific to plumbing fittings.

3D plumbing fittings for use with the PipeAdd and PipeFittingAdd commands
are a priority for us.

Let us know how you make out.

I hope this helps!
