locking elevations

we are providing coordination drawings for renovation construction projects.  the process requires us to measure and 3d model the existing MEP items, then model the new systems. these will attach to the existing systems.  how does one "lock" the existing systems so that when we are modeling and moving the new systems we don't move the existing systems.

Make sure that the existing systems have unique names and layers.  That is, they should not be the same as your new systems.  Then just lock the layer.  It will keep the mep items from moving.
