Hey, Where'd All The Messages Go?

Last night 5:00 CST I had a full screen of messages, today when I came in, I
had only 16 headers. what's going on? I was following a few of the older
strings, but didn't read them before I left yesterday. Today I came in to
find them gone. Is it my news reader, or are these newsgroups being
periodically cleaned?

Hi Shawn -

No, this group is not cleaned. Currently the posts are not removed from the
groups, they stay there "forever".

This is probably a setting in your news reader. From the looks of things you
are using Outlook Express to view the newsgroups. It's been a while since
I've done this, but I should be "close" to where the settings are.

In outlook express click Tools -> Options and go to the Maintenance tab.
There is a check box for "Delete news messages X days after downloading"
that you probably have checked. Uncheck that box.

Now you'll probably need to reset the newsgroup to get the old messages back
(which means that everything will come back in as unread, but that's the
only way I know of to get them back). To reset the newsgroup, right-click
the group, select properties, click the Local File Tab and then the Reset
button (say OK to whatever it prompts you with).

That "should" get all of the messages back for you.

Thank you, I didn't realize this was happening. I now know why some posts
seemed to be missing from other groups as well
