Creating New Connection Assignments, is it possible?

Is it possible to create a new connection assignment for end conditions of pipe and fittings?

I need to run Butt welded piping on a slope for gravity Steam condensate systems. But when I try to do this I need to okay for use of custom fitting to be created and frankly that dialog box is frustrating. What I need to do is clone a gravity system but use it for Butt welded pipe by creating butt welded pipe joints that have a gap of a 1/8" to be used as coupling that will allow for the AOD. This way I can get accurate cut lengths and be able to send it to fabrication. AM I on the right track?

 

By putting this plan into motion I have run into this problem, Butt welded fitting are male to male connection assignments to start with so when I attach my weld joint (coupling) to them with a CELL engagement so that I can get the desired slope with my AOD, and on the property palette it shows the connection as undefined “not butt welded.” NOT so good for the FAB Shop. So now I have to make my welded joint a male connection for the property palette to read it right and I am assuming with this I can’t have a AOD meaning in my layout I have to have custom fittings not the content in my library that I have created and leaves room for possible errors in Fabrication.

 

So this leaves me with this simple plan “create a new connection assignment and call “welded “ and have it act similar to the grooved connections or other gravity systems that allow for AOD. Not so easy, I have scoured the internet for any possible information and have found none that was helpful. I tried Gregg Stanley approach to changing the connection assignment to Female in AecbDomainConfig.xml but all that does is give me a Emun error upon launching AMEP. So there has to more change but where?

Really it can’t be that hard…What am I missing here?

I'll ask Gregg to look at the post and see what he recommends.  I do not know myself if this is possible.

I think it can be done, but it will require some effort in the content and in the xml file.

Buttwelded is a coded connection type that only works as male to male. Male ends with undefined connection type assume the name from the female connection. do what you ask you will need to redefine the connection type in the content to undefined for male ends. then create a new coupling with a CEL value greater than .0001 with a female connection type.

******Back up before editing***** Also all users using this content will need the same xml file.

If you want create a new connection type you can hijack an unused connection in the AecbEnumMapConfig.xml file

Located: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\MEP 2013\enu\Shared\AecbEnumMapConfig.xml

 

you can take something like Mastic connection and change the local name to be ButtWeld to report the connection type in the application. The globalStr must remain the same the localStr can change

 <ConnectionTypeEnum globalStr="Mastic" localStr="ButtWeld"/>

 In the AecbDomainConfig.xml (same folder)

you then can define the Mastic connection as a female connection type by adding in this section

<ConnectionTypeEnum globalStr="Grooved" gender="Female"/>

<ConnectionTypeEnum globalStr="Hub" gender="Female"/>

<ConectionTypeEnum globalStr="Mastic" gender="Female"/> 

 

Add the Buttweld connection in Content builder to the coupling with a CEL value greater than .01 and it should allow you to add the Angle of Deflection value to make it deflect. you can make the coupling an 1/8" wide to look like a weld.

Just thought that I would guys an update,

 

Well the Mastic Connection didn't work as well as I would liked, it listed all the connection types as undefined for everything that I connected to it. I reached down to my Captain Kirk Roots and thought why not go boldly go where no man has gone before, so feeling adventurous I chose a different golbalstr that has both male and female connections and "Clamped" seemed to be great place to start since our firm will not use it, we would use crimped instead. BAM that was the money shot. Everything act likes the grooved routing preference placing my weld couplings as I place my fittings. 

It’s just now I have new problem my when I draw slope pipe when I go to horizontal to vertical my Elbows disappear from the screen, they work great when I go from Horizontal to Horizontal. One problem after another……

Hi Cbowke,

 

Is this the same problem you are experiencing that I had a while ago?

If so, it seems there is no cure' at the moment, which is incredibly frustrating...
