Invalid limits

When I "Zoom All" my drawing becomes so small that I cannot see any detail.  I tried resetting the drawing limits.  However I am having an error when selecting the limits.

I type "limits" and then it asks me to select the lower left corner.  I click somewhere in the drawing and then it asks me to select the top right corner.  I click somewhere in the drawing.  Then I receive a message that states invalid limits and it asks me to click in the lower left corner.  This continues forever until I escape out of the command.

Any other way to force a zoom to the view I want?  Since I can't reset the limits it means I can't really rely on zoom all or zoom extents.

That usually is a sign you have an entity floating out away from your main drawing. Use CUTCLIP command and go around the edge to catch and delete it (you can try and PASTECLIP it back somewhere to see if it's useful or not). Then Zoom All again.

Have you tried Reset Setting to default? http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-mechanical/learn-explore/caas/documentation/AMECH-PP/2...

An excellent suggestion.  That's pretty much what I usually do in this scenario with one exception.  I do cutclip and then select all and then just shift+select what I know I want to keep.

Unfortunately when I pasted it into a fresh drawing and zoomed all I still couldn't see what it was.

Still wondering why the limits command didn't work because I've had success with that in the past.

The limits command will not allow you to create limits with objects outside of it. If you have used LIMITS before with success, there must not have been any objects outside of your definition. Or, you might have clipped the objects which would have been outside your definition.

LIMITS command defines a boundary for GRID display: LIMCHECK variable does what you are talking about and it uses the LIMITS boundary as the control.

Regardless of AutoCAD versions AFAIK.
