I'd never tried using AutoCAD Mechanical (2014) to detail Inventor models, but in fooling around with the linking capability, I can't figure out a way to create broken views in Mechanical like in Inventor drawings. A good chunk of our stuff is very long with big stretches of nothingness, so if we can't create broken - but associative - views, it's not too much use. Scaling down views won't really work without having multiple detail views to scale back up the areas that do need annotated, potentially making a very messy drawing.
TBH, I've never used Mechanical, so perhaps I'm missing something fundamental.

Unfortunately the VIEWBASE command within AutoCAD Mechanical 2014 does not have the ability to create an "exploded" or "broken" view the way that Inventor can. The VIEWBASE command was not designed for this functionality. It was designed as a way to bring a "snapshot" of an Inventor model into AutoCAD for annotation purposes. Please see the links to the Help file below:
About Importing Autodesk Inventor 3D Models
The alternative is to create your "exploded" view within Inventor in "paper space" and save that drawing to the AutoCAD .dwg format and bring that into AutoCAD.
Regards,
I kinda figured that would be the answer, but thanks for the confirmation.
Hi Guys,
Just a couple of clarifications, the VIEWBASE command can create Exploded views but only from Inventor Presentation (IPN) files. The exploded view will also include trail lines if you need them. And the drawing views created by the VIEWBASE, VIEWPROJ, VIEWSECTION and VIEWDETAIL commands are not "snapshots", they are fully associative. This means if the model in Inventor or AutoCAD's model space changes, all of the drawing views and annotations associated to the drawing views will update accordingly.
Hope this helps.

Andrew
