AutoCAD Mechanical 2009 crashes/closes with no error message

I've run into this problem multiple times across many different drawings I've received from vendors. Periodically, I will get a drawing that I cannot open successfully in AutoCAD Mechanical, but when I open the drawing in AutoCAD, there is no issue. Th error occurs immediately upon opening the drawing. I have the latest service packs, the latest video card drivers (though that makes little difference as this problem has ALWAYS occurred regardless), and I have tried to repair the drawing, audit the drawing in AutoCAD, repair the installation of AutoCAD Mechanical, gone through a clean install on a new computer to no avail.

The only solution that SOMETIMES works is when I open the DWG file in Inventor and resave it, however I lose some features/layers and generally just how the drawing looks when it is resaved from Inventor. Other times, I've done a DWG convert using TrueView, and that again SOMETIMES works.

I'm tired of having to deal with this. I would feel better if I actually received an error message of some sort, but there are none.

Basically, why would a drawing crash AutoCAD Mechanical but open up just fine in AutoCAD?

This might be a profile Issue. One test would be to log in in Windows with another User name. The start ACADM making sure that we are using the standard ACADMPP profile.

Thank you for your response, first and foremost.

The issue is not exclusive to me or the desktop I use. The same drawings that are opened on other machines result in the same error. Also, the standard ACADMPP profile is defaulted to be used upon startup of AutoCAD Mechanical. That being said, I do not think it is a profile issue.

I have experienced similar problems in 2009 (the version and the year, I'm using 2012 now) which were usually due to either  one of two issues:

1) The file would basically be too much for the PC we were running ACM 2009 on. Sometimes this would happen on large files (18 to 30 meg) on opening them - or when executing a more complex command on them. ACM 2009 would take a long time loading or executing and then finally disappear from the screen (back to desktop), without a crash report or anything. Solution would seem to be reducing filesize or increasing PC hardware.

2) We would have supportfiles, paths (templates etc) and xrefs inserted in the drawings through a too-slow network connection, which at times generated the same problem on smaller files as well. Solution was (up to a point) to move support paths and files to a closer/faster location.

Thanks for your reply.

The workstation I am running is a Dell Precision T3500 with an Intel Xeon W3570 running at 3.2 GHz with 6 GB of RAM.

The files size is not an issue as the files I am trying to open are in KB versus MB sized files. Also, the location is not an issue as I cannot open it even from my desktop.

I have noticed that opening the same drawings in newer versions of AutoCAD Mechanical do not seem to be affected by this apparent bug.
