2004DX companion error

I am trying to use the companion feature for the first time. When I launch FILE / NEW COMPANION FILE. I receive the following error message.
"Cannot initialize companion support. Libraries out of date or not found."
I did a complete install of the products and said yes when prompted if I wanted to install the companion.
Is there any documentation for the workflow of using the Companion functionality?

I discovered the problem....we use both inv 8 & 9 and the companion only works with the last session fired up.
ie: if your going to use companion in 2004dx and you last used IV9 you need to start IV8 to reset the registry setting to the same platform.
