I am using AutoCAD map 2000i. I have exported a SHP file from ARCVIEW GIS.
This SHP file contains 178 sample locations. When I view the SHP file in
Arcview, it appears as a symbol with identification text. When I import the
SHP into MAP, All that I get are 178 AutoCAD points. How do I get the
identification text to appear, and how do I get the symbol to appear as
something other than a point?

thanks!

Hi Mike!
Before answer to ur questions pay attention to islands/holes ...., probably,
if you used the MAPIMPORT command (the default Map2000i import command), you
could find duplicated centroids (points) in the islands/holes (it seems
there's only one but they are one above the other).
So I suggest you to use MAPIMPORT4 command (the default Map2000 import
command, older version works better...very strange!!).
BUT.......to import attribute datas with this older command, you have to
create BEFORE an "object datas table" with the same fields of the shape's
.dbf file.
Then you digit MAPIMPORT4 from the command line, choose the shp file.
PROCEED, selct "Map datas with object datas" (or something similar) and in
the button "datas...." select the table you have just created, PROCEED.
Et voila'....islands/holes with only one centroid.

You have to execute a query , alter property (text....)

>how do I get the symbol to appear as something other than a point
The shortest way: Format (from Autocad menu)----> Point Style

Hope to help you!

Well, there are a couple ways to do this. Since you have Map 2000i, the best way is to use Blocks and Block attributes. I do believe the Help will discuss this, but I will give you the basic steps. Create a Block in the drawing that you are importing into. Create an attribute with a tag that has the same name as the data field that contains the identification text that you want to use. In the Import options dialog choose the Data button and choose the Create as Blocks radio button. Select the Block name you created. Also check Get attribute data from fields and choose the field where the identification text is stored. This will bring in the data as the Block you chose and label the Block as an attribute. (It can be difficult to get the Blocks set up right - fun with Blocks.) Hope this helps...

PS> The other way is to upgrade to Map 5. There is a new option to import point data as text. In this case you will not get a symbol, just text.
