Shape file only displays partial in plot

I have a user who is trying to plot several design drawings which all have a connection to one shape file.  The file in question is used as background data for the design and is apparently fairly large.  When he plots the drawings only part of the shape data comes through.  Based on the information I have it sounds like the software does not have enough time to retreive all of the shape data before the plot data goes to the printer.

Anybody have a suggestion for how to fix this?

If you plot to a virtual PDF printer, how does it appear in Adobe Reader..?

It doesn't seem to matter what printer is involved.  All plots appear the same way, with some of the shape data missing.

Are actual geometry pieces from the shapefile disappearing during a plot, or are stylized labels from the shapefile disappearing from the plot?

Apparently some of the geometry does not plot.
