Raster DEM file ending with extension of .img Can you help with this?

Hello,

The state I live in, Kentucky, has recently posted for download DEM files that was generated recently.   A link to info about the metadata can be found here.
 http://kygisserver.ky.gov/geoportal/catalog/search/resource/details.page?uuid=%7B82BBA3A5-7F76-4ACA-...

And you can download them directly here.
ftp://ftp.kymartian.ky.gov/kyaped/DEMs_5FT/

According to the data in the first link the file type is a "Raster DEM"  and when you download and extract one of the zip files you get three files named such as.
********_DEM.IMG

********_DEM.IMG.AUX.XML

********_DEM.IMG.XML

My questions is how do I work with these "Raster DEM" files in autocad? Is this possible?

My version of CAD did (Civil 2013) did not recognize the IMG format and would not insert the files as images.  However, the ER Viewer by ERDAS would open the files and sav them as geo tiffs which I can insert into CAD.  You can download the viewer here:

My real goal was to somehow make contours from these files, like i can with normal .dem files.  I am guessing this is not possible in autocad?   this whole  .img  format is strange to me.

The man problem is that Map does not recognize the IMG format.  I was able to get around this by downloading the FWTools package (contains a collection of many GDAL and OGR tools) from their main site here:

http://fwtools.maptools.org/

Once installed, I was able to run the "gdal_translate" executable to take the original IMG file and output a geotiff.  In Civil (should also work in map), I was able to use dataconnect to connect to the geotiff image and then create contours (see attached image).

One note:the tools on FW tools are almost entirely command line.  There is a GUI portion, but I was not able to get it to output any new files.

We have a license of ArcMap 10 here which allowed us to open and change the format so that we could open in autocad as a .tiff.

Since it works for me, are you sure you've set up the interface as follows..?

Hi Antonio,

Sorry, but the images in your post appear as broken links for me.  I was attempting to use the "OpenEV" portion of te GUI.  It opened up, and would open the IMG files, but when I used the export tool, nothing would happen.  Could you re-post your pictures?  I may not have set up the GUI correctly.

Thanks,

That's exactly what I'm seeing (attached).  It's jut that when I hit the export button, nothing happens.  I've even tried searching my C drive to see if it writes the file out to the wrong location, but no luck.  I am thinking that there may be some sort of compatibility issue as I am on a 64 bit OS, but the FWTools are listed as 32 bit only.

I use it under Windows x32, so try to run it in XP Mode under your Windows x64:
