Problem Dual Displays: 'open' dialog is off display

I have maybe a unique problem with Map 3D 2006. For some reason when I
hit File/Open the program sort of freezes up like the dialog was open
but it is on neither of the two screens. If I hit Escape, then the
program starts acting like it should. Other dialogs open up on one or
the other displays, but not File/open. I think what is happening is the
open dialog is off my screen. This happened on another program, and when
playing around with the display settings, was able to get it back. But
nothing works for me with this problem.

I went ahead and uninstalled the driver (it is for a nvidia quadro
fx500/600) and reinstalled a slightly newer one with no help. I really
don't want to reinstall Map and have to then deal again with that CUI-
which me and it don't get along at all.

Can anyone tell me any other solutions? I will try to find some kind of
nvidia support, but maybe there is a config file or something I can
tweak in Map to make that open dialog open in a default position. I've
drug the program back and forth between the two displays and starting it
from each, but no luck getting my open file dialog back.

Anyone? Much appreciated for any help.

cheers, Jim

Are you sure it is actually opening? Have you looked at the command line to
see if it is just not requesting input there? You might want to check the
setting for the FileDia variable. It should be set to 1.

DOH! That was it.. Thanks very much for taking the time to help. No idea
how it got changed - I know that the program was crashing when trying to
print to Acrobat Distiller (reinstalling Distiller helped there) and a
couple other recent crashes from who knows what.

Just for the record, this happened again. Somehow the FileDia variable
gets reset to 0. I then also get errors trying to open 'recent files'
that are listed in the File menu dropdown, not to mention having no
"file open" dialog. I forget if this was after a crash.

I noticed the same thing since getting Civil 3d 2k7, 2k8 seems to do it too. Now each time it crashes the one of the first thing I do is reset filedia...

filedia resets on my computer at odd times. I do not notice that it has anything to do with a crash. I open a drawing and the dialog box does not open, I type in the filedia in the command line.

Some system variables seem to switch themselves on or off at odd times, as soon as the word rush is uttered when ACAD is open I can expect multiple crashes and strange errors.

Just at little hint on the filedia and cmddia being reset when there is no
hard crash. A lot of times if you are in a dialog box and press the escape
button the variables get reset to 0. It doesn't haven often but I noticed it
and have reduplicated it a few times. I always tell user to continue on with
the command even if they know something is not right THEN do an undo instead
of pressing escape.

Thank you for the tip. I will watch that, generally when I try to hit the esc button I end up hitting F1.
