Object Data Tables in Source Drawings

We have a hydrant drawing (A) that gets updated every year. The update
process is:

delete all objects (dwg A)
attach water drawing as a source (dwg B)
query 2 layers
detach source

When I attached the source (B) I received a warning that there were
duplicate object data table names. I went to delete the tables from my
hydrant drawing (A) and discovered that the tables were removed from both
drawings. That is not what I wanted. Is there a way to prevent that from
happening?

The duplicate OD table warning may be caused by having different fields in
the two dwgs tables with the same name. Even having one field uppercase and
and the other lowercase will cause that, or having one extra field in one
that's not in the other. To prevent it when you delete from A dwg delete the
table at that time before attaching the B dwg. When you deleted the table
did you do it in A dwg with B dwg attached or in A dwg after you
detached/deactivated B dwg?
If you deleted the table after you attached and queried dwg B you should of
gotten a saveback message unless you have it turned off.

Where / how do I control the saveback message? I searched help for saveback
but it is not there.

Thanks Murph. I have trouble with the logic in this process - I am still
learning how to use Map 3D. IMO it is not very intuitive.

The only message I get is "creating backup" of the source drawing in the
command window. That is the only indication that I have made changes to the
source drawing - which in this case I do not want. Attached is a screen
shot of the Save Back Tab.

To confirm the process:
A is source drawing - contains DWG data and OD tables
B is current, empty DWG
Attach A as source
Query some objects
B now contains queried objects and OD tables
Deleting tables from B also deletes tables from A
The only way to prevent this is to Detach A before deleting tables?

Yes.

When you attach a dwg to another dwg and query in any objects until you
detach the attached dwg any edit (by default setting) you do to those
objects edits them in both dwgs with the save back.
When you deleted the OD table you should of seen a message box pop up. Are
you using two monitors or any thing?
As a test create a dwg with a circle or two in it. save and close then
attach to a new dwg and query in all. Erase the circle and see if there is a
pop up message. Then detach the circle dwg and see if you get a message.

with pay!
