Modifying Object Data Tables

I have an Autocad dwg which consists of polylines and polygons - these have the Object Data table attached which define them. I have saved this dwg multiple times and also have converted the dwg to shape files. I now want to go back into the cad dwg and change the "field names" in the Object Data Table. This is where I run into problems. I cannot change the "field names". I have tried changing my login to the superuser login before I open the dwg and also when I am in the dwg. I type in adedefdata and then go to the Modify button -click on that and I can add or delete, I can even change the type(character, point etc) and also change the table name and use the Update and it changes the table BUT i cannot change the field name - the "Update" button is always grayed out. Any insight as to what I can further do.

Export the objects that have that OD attached to them to SDF or SHP. Then
delete those objects and the OD table. Import the objects you export and
edit the field names as you import creating the OD tables. Field names can
not be deleted or renamed in an OD table you can only delete it and start
over.

Thanks for your help - it's what I though and the export - import works well.
