Merging AutoCAD Map drawings into GIS(having cooridnates problems)

I am using AutoCAD map 2002.I am trying to export CAD files into GIS. AutoCAD map will allow you to export CAD files as shapefiles. The problem I am having is the coordinate system. The GIS database was done in TN. State coordinates. The drawings (property boundaries) were done by surveyors. The surveyors didn’t use the TN State coordinate system on the drawings. I know the drawings are not going to overlay perfect with the polygons in the GIS database. How would you get those drawings into the required state coordinates. Somehow I have to assign the property corners to a certain location in the GIS database. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Someone suggested getting the surveyor to put the drawing into The TN. State coordinates system(problem, There are hundreds of drawing done years ago)

Welcome to the real world of using CAD and GIS in a
mixed environment. Here's our solution:

1. Export just the parcel(s) needed from
ArcView.

2. Import this shapefile into AcadMap.

3. Query the COGO file of the subdivision or
whatever, or just COGO directly in the drawing with the imported polygons. Make
sure the COGO work is done outside of, and next to, the imported
polygons.

4. Use the ADERSHEET command to make the COGO work
fit into the imported polygons.

5. Export newly created polygons

There are ins and outs and other interestingly
subtle nuances about this procedure. Feel free to call me if you
like.

Coordinates are of no direct concern because the
GIS polygons are imported into their correct position in the drawing
space.

What GIS package are you using?
It should allow you to import the shape files or drawing files for that
matter, and place them where you like regardless of the coordinates of
the drawing files. I do this all the time in ArcView.

Hi Jesse,

The best way to handle this would probably be to rubber-sheet (ADERSHEET
command) your surveyed data into your GIS data. If you know the state
plane coordinates of atleast 3 points (the more the better) in your
surveyed data, you can then fit the surveyed data to match the GIS data.

Jesse, from your e-mail address I would say you work for Metro
Nashville, but if not have you checked all the offices/dept. there and
seen if they may have those already done, I know about 50 mile up I24
the county has all the old dwg, plat, etc. in a format I can use.
